little-coder review

little-coder is a terminal coding agent built on pi and tuned for small local language models, with support for cloud models too.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 22, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

little-coder is a coding agent tuned for small local models, built on top of pi with about 30 extensions and 30 skill files. It is for developers who want to code with a local model such as Qwen3.6-35B-A3B served by llama.cpp. It also works offline and on an 8 GB laptop GPU.

What little-coder does

  • little-coder reads, edits, and runs commands against your working tree from a terminal REPL, using the directory you launched it from.
  • little-coder's Plan Mode researches a request with sub-coders, asks 1-3 clarifying questions, then writes a plan before any edits.
  • little-coder's Deep Research scopes a topic, fans out read-only research sub-coders, and returns one cited markdown report.
  • little-coder can spawn isolated, read-only child sessions to research a question and report back without cluttering the main conversation.
  • little-coder runs long commands in the background with ShellStart and wakes the model on job events instead of polling.
  • little-coder injects short tool usage cards per turn and lets you choose separate models for planning and implementation.
  • little-coder requires reading a file before editing it, so edits match the file's exact current text.

How it works

little-coder is pi plus bundled extensions, skill markdown files, and a Python benchmark harness. Its launcher runs pi with --no-extensions and loads only the bundled set, keeping cold-start context around 7k tokens. You run it in a project directory and point it at a model. Supported providers include local llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio, and cloud providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

How to install and start using little-coder

One-line install

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/itayinbarr/little-coder/main/install.sh | bash

With npm

npm install -g little-coder

With bun

bun add -g little-coder

Requirements

  • Node.js 22.19 or later, even when installing with bun.
  • A model to connect to: a local server (llama.cpp, Ollama, LM Studio) or a cloud provider API key.
  • Local providers need some value in the API-key environment variable, such as `noop`.

First steps

  1. Serve a local model, for example Qwen3.6-35B-A3B with llama.cpp on port 8888, or use Ollama, LM Studio, or a cloud model.
  2. For local providers, set a placeholder key such as `export LLAMACPP_API_KEY=noop`. For cloud providers, set the standard key, such as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
  3. Change into your project directory and run `little-coder`, or pass `--model` to name a model explicitly.
  4. Press ctrl+h for a panel of key shortcuts, or run `/hotkeys` for the full reference.

Who little-coder is for

  • Developers who want a coding agent running fully offline on a local model.
  • Developers with limited GPU memory, such as an 8 GB laptop GPU running a MoE model.
  • pi users who want a ready-made extension set tuned for small models.
  • Developers running long jobs like training or builds that should not block the agent.

Limitations to know

  • little-coder does not load globally `pi install`'d packages by default because its launcher runs pi with `--no-extensions`.
  • little-coder's Deep Research runs in a scratch directory. It is meant for external research, not for exploring your own code.
  • little-coder runs sub-coders one at a time by default, because parallel sub-coders contend for the same local model server.
  • little-coder's image attachments need the vision projector. A text-only llama.cpp setup rejects them with a 4xx error.

Is little-coder growing? Usage data

little-coder was not ranked on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026: it needs 25 or more new stars or 1,000 or more added downloads in a week to rank.

little-coder FAQ

Is little-coder free and open source?

Yes. little-coder's source code is on GitHub (itayinbarr/little-coder) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free.

How do I install little-coder?

Run curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/itayinbarr/little-coder/main/install.sh | bash. It needs Node.js >=22.19.0. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

Is little-coder still maintained?

Yes. The itayinbarr/little-coder repository was last updated on Sep 18, 2026, and the latest release, v1.20.0 on GitHub, came out on Sep 18, 2026.

How popular is little-coder?

little-coder has 2.7k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 13 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 34 a week.

little-coder vs OpenCode: how do they compare?

little-coder and OpenCode are both tracked by Devtoolwatch as AI coding agents. little-coder has 2.7k GitHub stars and OpenCode has 223.6k. OpenCode is an open source AI coding agent that helps you write and run code in a terminal, desktop app, or IDE extension. OpenCode review.

What are the best alternatives to little-coder?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

How does little-coder relate to pi?

little-coder is pi plus about 30 extensions, 30 skill markdown files, and a Python benchmark harness. It does not fork pi or shadow its CLI. pi is a plain dependency, and little-coder's launcher loads only its bundled extension set.

Can little-coder use cloud models?

Yes. little-coder works with cloud models the same way as local ones. Examples are --model anthropic/claude-haiku-4-5 and --model openai/gpt-4o-mini. Set the standard environment variable, such as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or OPENAI_API_KEY.

Which local model is little-coder tuned for?

little-coder is tuned for Qwen3.6-35B-A3B served by a local llama.cpp server. That is the default model in models.json. Its MoE setup keeps experts in RAM and attention on the GPU, so a 22 GB model runs on 8 GB of VRAM.

Can little-coder use a model served from another machine?

Yes. little-coder reads each provider's *_BASE_URL variable, which accepts any host. You can run inference on a GPU machine on your LAN and connect from a laptop, for example with LLAMACPP_BASE_URL.

Can I add my own extensions to little-coder?

Yes. Put your extensions in ~/.config/little-coder/extensions/, point LITTLE_CODER_EXTRA_EXTENSIONS at files, or launch with --with-pi-extensions. Run /extensions to see what is loaded.
