OpenCode review
OpenCode is an open source AI coding agent that helps you write and run code in a terminal, desktop app, or IDE extension.
TL;DR
OpenCode is an open source AI coding agent available as a terminal interface, desktop app, and IDE extension. It is for developers who want to choose their model: it includes free models and connects to many LLM providers, including local models. It also supports GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT Plus/Pro logins.

What OpenCode does
- OpenCode includes two built-in agents, build and plan, that you switch between with the Tab key.
- OpenCode's plan agent is read-only: it denies file edits by default and asks permission before running bash commands.
- OpenCode provides a general subagent for complex searches and multistep tasks, invoked with @general in messages.
- OpenCode can run multiple agents in parallel on the same project.
- OpenCode connects to LLM providers through Models.dev, including OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and local models.
- OpenCode lets you log in with GitHub to use a Copilot account, or with OpenAI to use ChatGPT Plus or Pro.
- OpenCode includes a set of free models you can use without creating an account.
How it works
OpenCode runs as a terminal interface, a desktop app (beta), or an IDE extension. You pick a model from its free set, from Zen, or from another provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or xAI, or you connect a local model. The install script places the binary in $HOME/.opencode/bin. Updates are installed through /update instead of automatically.
How to install and start using OpenCode
With the install script
curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/v2/install | bashWith npm
npm i -g @opencode/cli@latestWith Homebrew (macOS and Linux)
brew install anomalyco/tap/opencode-v2Requirements
- OpenCode needs an AI model: the included free models, a Zen account, a provider account, or a local model.
- The OpenCode desktop app runs on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows, and Linux.
First steps
- Remove OpenCode versions older than 0.1.x before installing.
- Install OpenCode with the install script or a package manager.
- Choose a free model, or log in with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro, or connect another provider.
- Press Tab to switch between the build agent and the read-only plan agent.
Who OpenCode is for
- Developers who want to choose among many LLM providers or run local models.
- Developers who already pay for GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro and want to use those subscriptions.
- Exploring unfamiliar codebases or planning changes with the read-only plan agent.
- Teams in privacy-sensitive environments, since OpenCode does not store code or context data.
Limitations to know
- OpenCode discontinued session sharing in v1.19.1. Share links, sharing commands, and importing from share URLs no longer work.
- OpenCode stores your data when you use its free models.
- The OpenCode desktop app is in beta.
- OpenCode 1.x installs stay on 1.x. Upgrading to OpenCode 2 requires an explicit opencode upgrade --major or the /update offer.
