Unity MCP review

Unity MCP is an open-source bridge that lets AI assistants control the Unity Editor through the Model Context Protocol.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 25, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

Unity MCP, also called MCP for Unity, connects MCP clients such as Claude, Codex, Cursor and VS Code to the Unity Editor. Unity developers can use it to manage assets, control scenes, edit scripts and run tests in natural language. It exposes 50 tools in groups, supports HTTP or stdio, and can route one session across multiple open Editors.

What Unity MCP does

  • Unity MCP creates scenes and GameObjects and drives prefabs and materials from natural-language prompts.
  • Unity MCP edits C# scripts, manages assets, runs tests, profiles, and builds from any MCP client.
  • Unity MCP routes a single MCP session to any of several open Unity Editors, with session isolation across clients.
  • Unity MCP lets you activate tool groups such as animation, vfx, ui, testing or probuilder only when needed.
  • Unity MCP supports custom tools registered with a C# attribute, project-scoped or global.
  • Unity MCP v10 added AI asset generation for 3D, 2D images and audio, using your own key.
  • Unity MCP offers Roslyn script validation and a remote-hosted server option with auth.

How it works

Unity MCP has three layers. Your MCP client talks over stdio or HTTP to a Python server built on FastMCP. The server handles routing and session isolation, and talks over WebSocket to a C# Editor plugin. The plugin runs inside the Unity Editor process and executes commands through Unity Editor APIs on the main thread. Everything runs on your machine.

Requirements

  • Unity 2021.3 LTS through 6.x
  • Python 3.10 or later, via uv
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Cline or Gemini CLI

First steps

  1. In Unity, open Package Manager, choose Add package from git URL, and paste the Unity MCP git URL.
  2. Open Window → MCP for Unity → Configure All Detected Clients to set up your MCP clients.
  3. Prompt your assistant, for example: "Create a cube at the origin and add a Rigidbody."

Who Unity MCP is for

  • Unity developers who want an AI assistant to build scenes, edit scripts and manage assets
  • Teams running multiple Unity Editors or multi-agent, remote-hosted workflows over HTTP
  • Developers who want to extend their AI assistant with custom Unity tools written in C#

Limitations to know

  • Unity MCP treats Codex as a stdio-only client.
  • Unity MCP asset generation requires bringing your own provider key.
  • Unity MCP is not affiliated with Unity Technologies.
