Treg review
Treg is a registry and proxy that gives AI agents one token for a catalog of paid third-party API endpoints and team-shared tools.
TL;DR
Treg describes itself as OpenRouter for agent tools. It gives an agent one base URL and one token for catalog endpoints priced per call. Teams can also share their own keys, CLIs and skills. Credentials are injected server-side, so callers never hold the keys. Treg fits teams running agents that need SEO, enrichment, social or scraping data without separate provider subscriptions.

What Treg does
- Treg lets agents search a catalog by task, read the price, and call endpoints without signing up with each provider.
- Treg bills catalog calls made with its own key to a team's prepaid balance. Calls through verified public routes are free.
- Treg lets teammates register API keys, OAuth connections, vendor CLIs and SKILL.md skills. Calls made with a team's own key are never metered.
- Treg runs vendor CLIs such as stripe and gh with the org's credential injected, either locally or on the registry server.
- Treg offers routed endpoints such as treg.web.search, where it picks the provider for you and names it.
- Treg exposes MCP surfaces, including a Claude.ai connector at https://treg.to/mcp/v2/.
- Treg's treg scan and treg upload commands detect shareable keys, skills and CLIs in a project and register them encrypted server-side.
How it works
Treg works as a proxy that relays requests to the upstream API and injects auth server-side. You can prefix a real upstream request with https://treg.to/call/ and send your X-Treg-Token header. You can also use the treg CLI, the MCP server, or a Claude Code plugin. For each catalog call, Treg uses your team's own key first, then a free public route, then its own billed key.
How to install and start using Treg
Install the CLI
curl -fsSL https://treg.to/install.sh | shAs a Claude Code plugin
/plugin marketplace add superdesigndev/tregFor other agents
npx skills add superdesigndev/treg -s tregRequirements
- The tools-registry Python package requires Python >=3.12 and <3.14.
- Billed catalog calls require a treg account and a prepaid team balance.
First steps
- Sign in with treg login. GitHub is the default; use --email for a one-time code or --token for agents and CI.
- Find a tool by what it does with treg catalog search "backlinks for a domain".
- Call a tool, for example treg call tikhub.tiktok.user.profile --query uniqueId=tiktok.
- Run treg balance to see exactly what the call cost.
Who Treg is for
- Agent builders who need SEO, enrichment, social, ads or scraping data without buying a subscription for each provider.
- Teams that want every teammate's agent to use shared API keys and CLIs without exposing the credentials.
- Claude Code users who want catalog tools through a plugin and an MCP server.
Limitations to know
- Treg refuses endpoints it has no published price for. You must connect your own key for those.
- Treg does not pick or fail over between providers for you, except on opt-in treg.<capability> routed endpoints.
- Treg's Claude.ai connector surface excludes image, video and audio generation.
- Treg stops serving billed calls when the balance runs out, returning HTTP 402 insufficient_balance until you top up.

Treg FAQ
Is Treg free and open source?
Treg's code is on GitHub (superdesigndev/treg), but the repository doesn't declare a standard open-source license. Check its license file before using it commercially.
How do I install Treg?
Run curl -fsSL https://treg.to/install.sh | sh. The tools-registry package needs Python 3.12 or newer, below 3.14. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.
Is Treg still maintained?
Yes. The superdesigndev/treg repository was last updated on Oct 21, 2026, and the latest release, tools-registry 0.27.0 on PyPI, came out on Oct 20, 2026.
How popular is Treg?
Treg has 6.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 865 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 569 a week. What is Treg?
Treg is a registry and credential-injecting proxy for agent tools. It describes itself as OpenRouter for tools. An agent uses one base URL and one token to call catalog endpoints priced per call, plus tools the team has shared.
Do I need accounts with the API providers to use Treg?
No. Treg serves catalog endpoints with its own key, billed to your team's balance, or through verified public routes, which are free. If you connect your own key, Treg uses it first and does not meter those calls.
Can I self-host Treg?
Yes. The README states that anyone can self-host Treg. The hosted version runs at treg.to.
Do callers see the API keys when using Treg?
No. Treg injects credentials server-side and strips your X-Treg-Token before the request reaches the upstream API. Callers never hold the keys.
Does Treg work with MCP clients?
Yes. Treg has an /mcp/ surface for catalog endpoints, team tools and skills. A separate /mcp/v2/ surface serves the Claude Connectors Directory. You can run treg mcp install to set it up.
