What MCP Atlassian does
- MCP Atlassian searches Jira with JQL and Confluence with CQL through the jira_search and confluence_search tools.
- MCP Atlassian creates, updates and transitions Jira issues, including changing an issue's status.
- MCP Atlassian gets, creates and updates Confluence pages and adds comments to them.
- MCP Atlassian includes Jira Service Management tools to list request types, inspect their fields and raise customer requests.
- MCP Atlassian moves Jira issues between sprints with the jira_add_issues_to_sprint tool.
- MCP Atlassian adds epic hierarchy and dependency tools, plus Confluence Live Docs page creation.
How it works
MCP Atlassian runs as an MCP server, typically launched with uvx from an IDE's MCP configuration such as Claude Desktop or Cursor. You pass Jira and Confluence URLs and credentials as environment variables. It can also run over HTTP transports, including SSE and streamable-http, with multi-user support. Installation options include uvx, Docker, pip and source.
How to install and start using MCP Atlassian
Run with uvx
uvx mcp-atlassianRequirements
- Python 3.10 or later.
- An Atlassian API token for Cloud, or a Personal Access Token for Server/Data Center.
- Confluence Server/Data Center v6.0+ or Jira Server/Data Center v8.14+ for self-hosted deployments.
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor or Autohand Code.
First steps
- Create an Atlassian API token at id.atlassian.com, or a Personal Access Token for Server/Data Center.
- Add the mcp-atlassian server with uvx to your Claude Desktop or Cursor MCP configuration.
- Set JIRA_URL, JIRA_USERNAME, JIRA_API_TOKEN and the matching CONFLUENCE_ variables in the server's env block.
- Ask your assistant something like "Find issues assigned to me in PROJ project".
Who MCP Atlassian is for
- Developers who want AI assistants to query and update Jira issues from the IDE.
- Teams running self-hosted Jira or Confluence Server/Data Center.
- Teams searching Confluence documentation through an AI assistant.
- Operators hosting a shared, multi-user MCP server over HTTP transport.
Limitations to know
- MCP Atlassian is not an official Atlassian product.
- MCP Atlassian covers only Jira and Confluence.
- MCP Atlassian versions before 0.23.1 lacked per-request authentication on SSE endpoints; upgrading is strongly recommended for SSE users.
- MCP Atlassian requires you to store Atlassian API tokens in your configuration, and the project warns to keep them secure.
