OfficeCLI review

OfficeCLI is a single-binary command-line tool that lets AI agents create, read, and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Nov 1, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

OfficeCLI is an open-source command-line tool for reading, editing, and creating .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files without an Office installation. OfficeCLI is built for AI coding agents and for developers automating document work. OfficeCLI includes an HTML rendering engine, so agents can render a document, look at it, and fix it.

What OfficeCLI does

  • OfficeCLI reads, modifies, and creates Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from the command line.
  • OfficeCLI renders .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files to HTML or PNG so agents can check their output visually.
  • OfficeCLI returns structured JSON for any document element, addressed by a path such as '/slide[1]/shape[1]'.
  • OfficeCLI provides a live browser preview that refreshes after each add, set, or remove command.
  • OfficeCLI evaluates Excel formulas with 350+ built-in functions and supports pivot tables, charts, and conditional formatting.
  • OfficeCLI converts mermaid diagrams into native editable shapes and accepts LaTeX input for equations in Word and PowerPoint.
  • OfficeCLI analyzes documents for formatting issues, style inconsistencies, and structural problems.

How it works

OfficeCLI ships as a self-contained binary with the .NET runtime embedded. You run commands such as create, add, get, view, and watch against a file. Running officecli install copies the binary to your PATH. It also installs an officecli skill into detected coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and GitHub Copilot. The close command flushes the resident session to disk.

How to install and start using OfficeCLI

macOS / Linux script

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/iOfficeAI/OfficeCLI/main/install.sh | bash

With Homebrew

brew install officecli

With npm

npm install -g @officecli/officecli

Requirements

  • OfficeCLI needs no Microsoft Office installation and no separate .NET runtime.
  • OfficeCLI provides binaries for macOS (Apple Silicon, Intel), Linux (x64, ARM64), and Windows (x64, ARM64).

First steps

  1. Create a blank presentation with officecli create deck.pptx.
  2. Start a live preview at http://localhost:26315 with officecli watch deck.pptx.
  3. In another terminal, add a slide: officecli add deck.pptx / --type slide --prop title="Hello, World!"
  4. Save changes to disk with officecli close deck.pptx.

Who OfficeCLI is for

  • Developers giving AI coding agents the ability to produce and edit Office documents.
  • Teams generating reports from databases, APIs, or test results in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Headless Office automation in Docker or other containerized environments.
  • Batch document processing such as bulk find/replace and style updates.

Limitations to know

  • OfficeCLI edits run in a resident session that you must close to write changes to disk.

OfficeCLI FAQ

Is OfficeCLI free and open source?

Yes. OfficeCLI's source code is on GitHub (iOfficeAI/OfficeCLI) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free. Its website also links to a pricing page (https://github.com/pricing) for any paid plans.

How do I install OfficeCLI?

Run curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/iOfficeAI/OfficeCLI/main/install.sh | bash. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

Is OfficeCLI still maintained?

Yes. The iOfficeAI/OfficeCLI repository was last updated on Oct 30, 2026, and the latest release, v1.0.160 on GitHub, came out on Oct 30, 2026.

How popular is OfficeCLI?

OfficeCLI has 32.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 505 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 531 a week. That made it #31 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

What are the best alternatives to OfficeCLI?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

No. OfficeCLI is a single self-contained binary with the .NET runtime embedded. It reads and writes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without an Office installation.

How does an AI agent start using OfficeCLI?

An AI agent can start from a skill file. Paste curl -fsSL https://officecli.ai/SKILL.md into the agent's chat. The skill file teaches the agent how to install the binary and use the commands. Alternatively, running officecli install sets up the skill for detected coding agents.

Can OfficeCLI show what a document looks like?

Yes. OfficeCLI renders documents to HTML or PNG. The view command with the html option opens a rendered preview in the browser. The watch command serves a live preview that updates after each edit.

Which AI coding agents does OfficeCLI integrate with?

OfficeCLI's install command adds its skill to the coding agents it detects. The README names Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and GitHub Copilot. The AionUi desktop app also uses OfficeCLI.
