FastMCP review
FastMCP is a Python framework for building Model Context Protocol servers, clients, and interactive apps that connect LLMs to tools and data.
TL;DR
FastMCP is a Python framework for building MCP servers, clients, and interactive apps. It is for Python developers who want to expose functions as MCP tools without writing schemas and protocol handling by hand. FastMCP generates schemas and validation from Python functions and manages transport, authentication, and protocol lifecycle.

What FastMCP does
- FastMCP turns Python functions into MCP tools, with schema, validation, and documentation generated automatically.
- FastMCP servers expose Python functions, data, and instructions as MCP tools, resources, and prompts.
- FastMCP clients connect to local or remote MCP servers through Python, the command line, or another MCP application.
- FastMCP Apps let tools return forms, tables, charts, and other interactive interfaces rendered directly in the conversation.
- FastMCP handles transport negotiation, authentication, and connection lifecycle when a client connects to a server URL.
- FastMCP supports component authorization and OAuth client credentials providers with issuer binding.
How it works
You write ordinary Python: create a FastMCP instance, decorate functions with @mcp.tool, and call mcp.run(). FastMCP derives schemas from the functions, validates inputs and outputs, and exposes them through MCP. Clients connect to local or remote MCP servers by URL. FastMCP 4 is built for the new MCP protocol and uses system trust stores by default.
How to install and start using FastMCP
With uv
uv add fastmcpRequirements
- Python 3.10 or later
- FastMCP 3.4.11 requires certifi 2026.10.19 or later
First steps
- Add FastMCP to your project with uv, as the README recommends.
- Create a server with mcp = FastMCP("Demo 🚀") and decorate a Python function with @mcp.tool.
- Call mcp.run() under if __name__ == "__main__" to start the server.
- Give your coding agent https://gofastmcp.com/llms.txt as its starting point for the documentation.
Who FastMCP is for
- Python developers exposing existing functions as MCP tools, resources, or prompts for LLMs
- Developers writing programmatic clients that connect to local or remote MCP servers
- Teams that want tools to return interactive UIs such as forms, tables, or charts in the conversation
Limitations to know
- FastMCP is a Python library; TypeScript developers need the separate FastMCP for TypeScript package.
- After the October 2026 CA incident, upgrading FastMCP alone is insufficient; system, container, custom, and installer trust stores also need updates.
- Users of ClientCredentialsOAuthProvider or PrivateKeyJWTOAuthProvider must set issuer to enable issuer-binding protection in 4.1.2.
- FastMCP covers the application layer; team-wide governance, SSO, and audit logs are offered through Prefect Horizon instead.
