Jevgrep review

Jevgrep is a CLI for coding agents that finds relevant files and source excerpts when you ask what code does, using the Jev model.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Nov 1, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

Jevgrep is a command-line tool, run as jg, that answers repository questions with relevant files, reading leads and verbatim source excerpts. Jevgrep is for developers using coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode on unfamiliar codebases. Jevgrep uses Jev to judge relevance across folders, files and declarations, and it returns evidence rather than a generated answer.

What Jevgrep does

  • Jevgrep takes a natural-language question about a repository and returns relevant files, reading leads and verbatim source excerpts in one stdout response.
  • Jevgrep explores the repository hierarchy, selects files using content previews, and identifies useful source units with surrounding context.
  • Jevgrep parses declarations in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go and Rust, and uses a fallback for other text.
  • Jevgrep installs an agent skill that teaches detected coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode how to call it.
  • Jevgrep excludes hidden, dependency, build, binary and obvious credential files by default and respects ignore files.
  • Jevgrep reports eligible file counts for a search root with jg files, without a provider key or network request.
  • Jevgrep bounds runaway searches with a default provider-attempt ceiling of 1,000 and a default stdout ceiling of 256,000 bytes.

How it works

Jevgrep is a Node.js CLI you install from npm and run as jg with a question and a search root. Jevgrep sends eligible source content to Jev through the provider you choose during jg auth: Vercel AI Gateway, TypeSafe, OpenRouter, OpenCode Zen or a custom TypeSafe-compatible endpoint. Results go to stdout for your coding agent, which then implements and tests the change.

How to install and start using Jevgrep

With npm

npm install -g @dzhng/jevgrep

Install the agent skill

jg skill

Upgrade with npm

npm install -g @dzhng/jevgrep@latest

Requirements

  • Node.js 22 or newer; skill installation needs Node 22.20+, npm/npx and network access.
  • macOS, Linux or Windows.
  • A key for Vercel AI Gateway, TypeSafe, OpenRouter, OpenCode Zen or a custom TypeSafe-compatible endpoint.

First steps

  1. Run jg auth to choose a provider and save its key in an owner-only config file.
  2. Run jg skill from the project where your coding agent works to install the jevgrep skill.
  3. Run jg doctor to check the saved provider setup with synthetic input.
  4. Ask a question, for example: jg "How are telemetry events recorded and sent?" ./my-project

Who Jevgrep is for

  • Developers whose coding agents need to find code in unfamiliar repositories before making changes.
  • Questions about behavior that span multiple unfamiliar files, when you don't know where the code lives.
  • Teams using Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode who want a file-discovery step before implementation.

Limitations to know

  • Jevgrep sends eligible source content to an external provider, so choose a search root you intend to send.
  • Jevgrep's sensitive-file detection is best-effort, not redaction or a guarantee that all sensitive information is removed.
  • Jevgrep output is evidence, not a generated answer or a guarantee that every relevant file was found.
  • Jevgrep does not read credentials or endpoint overrides from environment variables; you must run jg auth.

Jevgrep FAQ

Is Jevgrep free and open source?

Yes. Jevgrep's source code is on GitHub (dzhng/jevgrep) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

How do I install Jevgrep?

Run npm install -g @dzhng/jevgrep. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

Is Jevgrep still maintained?

Yes. The dzhng/jevgrep repository was last updated on Nov 1, 2026, and the latest release, v0.8.0 on GitHub, came out on Oct 1, 2026.

How popular is Jevgrep?

Jevgrep has 3.1k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 229 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 519 a week. That made it #24 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

What are the best alternatives to Jevgrep?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

Does Jevgrep send my source code to a third party?

Yes. Jevgrep sends eligible source content to Jev through the provider selected during jg auth. Default filtering excludes hidden, dependency, build, binary and obvious credential files, including .env variants. Use jg files to see what a search may read without any network request.

Do I need to install the skill in addition to the CLI?

Yes. Installing the Jevgrep CLI alone does not teach your coding agent to use it. Run jg skill in the project where your agent works; it detects agents such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode. Add --global for a user-wide install or --yes for unattended installation.

Which languages does Jevgrep parse?

Jevgrep supports declaration parsing for Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go and Rust. Extensionless Python and Node scripts are recognized by their shebang. Other text files use a fallback.

When should I use rg instead of Jevgrep?

Use a direct read or rg when you already know an exact symbol or path. Jevgrep is most useful for questions that span unfamiliar files, where you know the behavior but not its location.

How do I exclude paths from a Jevgrep search?

Jevgrep accepts a repeatable --exclude flag with gitignore patterns relative to the search root, for example --exclude '**/*.test.ts' --exclude 'src/generated/'. The same filtering flags work with jg files.

Did Jevgrep reduce cost in its own benchmark?

Jevgrep's ten-task Python SWE-bench comparison solved the same 8 of 10 tasks as a no-Jev baseline. A 0.4.3 rerun including Jev cost measured 25.8% lower total cost. The authors note these are single-run results, not guaranteed savings.
