ccusage review

ccusage is a local CLI that analyzes token usage and estimated costs from coding agent CLIs like Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 22, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

ccusage reads local usage logs from coding agent CLIs and turns them into daily, weekly, monthly, and session reports with token counts and USD cost estimates. It is for developers who use tools like Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or GitHub Copilot CLI. It covers many agents in one report and reads data locally without uploading it.

What ccusage does

  • ccusage builds daily, weekly, monthly, and session reports of token usage and costs from local coding agent CLI data.
  • ccusage combines usage from every detected source, including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Amp, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot CLI, into one report.
  • ccusage estimates USD spend from token counts and model pricing, and tracks cache creation and cache read tokens separately.
  • ccusage tracks Claude Code usage within 5-hour billing windows and offers a Claude Code status line for hooks (Beta).
  • ccusage exports reports as structured JSON with --json and can hide cost fields with --no-cost.
  • ccusage filters reports by date range, recent periods, timezone, and Claude Code project or instance.
  • ccusage supports per-model cost breakdowns with --breakdown and custom pricing overrides in ccusage.json.

How it works

ccusage runs as a terminal command, usually through a package runner such as npx or bunx without a global install. It reads local usage logs written by supported coding agent CLIs and prices tokens using LiteLLM pricing data. An --offline flag uses pre-cached pricing without network access. Output is a responsive terminal table or JSON. Claude Code blocks and statusline features depend on Claude-specific local data and hooks.

How to install and start using ccusage

With npx

npx ccusage@latest

With bunx

bunx ccusage

With Nix

nix run github:ccusage/ccusage -- daily

Requirements

  • A package runner such as npx, bunx, pnpm dlx, or Nix to run the CLI.
  • Local usage data from at least one supported coding agent CLI.

First steps

  1. Run `npx ccusage@latest` to see a daily report of all detected coding agent CLI usage.
  2. Narrow to one source with a focused command such as `ccusage claude daily` or `ccusage codex daily`.
  3. Use `--last 1` on a daily, weekly, or monthly report to see today, this week, or this month.
  4. Add `--json` to export the report in structured JSON for scripts.

Who ccusage is for

  • Developers who want to track token spend across several coding agent CLIs in one place.
  • Claude Code users monitoring usage within 5-hour billing windows or in the status bar.
  • Teams scripting usage reports from JSON output.

Limitations to know

  • ccusage shows estimated costs computed from token counts and model pricing, not billed amounts.
  • ccusage blocks and statusline reports work only with Claude Code, since they depend on Claude-specific data and hooks.
  • ccusage statusline integration is marked Beta.
  • ccusage only reads local data, so usage from other machines is not included.
