What AWS MCP Servers does
- AWS MCP Servers gives AI applications access to AWS documentation, contextual guidance, and best practices through the Model Context Protocol.
- AWS MCP Servers turns common workflows such as CDK and Terraform into tools that foundation models can call directly.
- The AWS Documentation MCP Server retrieves the latest AWS docs and API references.
- The AWS IaC MCP Server provides CloudFormation documentation access, CDK best practices guidance, construct examples, and security validation.
- The billing and cost management server includes tools for pricing, cost anomalies, and billing view segments.
- The Redshift MCP server offers an opt-in read-write mode and named transactions.
- The servers cover more areas, including containers, serverless, AI and machine learning, messaging, and healthcare and lifesciences.
How it works
AWS MCP Servers run as MCP servers that your MCP client connects to with a 1:1 connection. The servers in this repository support only the stdio transport. Server Sent Events support was removed on May 26, 2025, and work toward Streamable HTTP is in progress. Clients such as Kiro, Cursor, VS Code, and Claude Code typically launch servers with uvx. The servers can also run in containers.
How to install and start using AWS MCP Servers
Requirements
- An MCP client that supports the stdio transport, such as Kiro, Cline, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, or Claude Code.
- The uvx command, which the provided install configurations use to launch servers.
First steps
- Pick a server from the README list, such as the AWS Documentation MCP Server.
- Use the one-click install button to add the server in Cursor or VS Code.
- For other clients, add the server to the client's MCP config file, such as .vscode/mcp.json or .mcp.json for Claude Code.
Who AWS MCP Servers is for
- Developers using AI coding assistants for AWS infrastructure, CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform work.
- Teams that want AI assistants to work from up-to-date AWS documentation and API references.
- Builders of conversational assistants or background agents that call AWS services.
Limitations to know
- AWS MCP Servers in this repository support only the stdio transport. Streamable HTTP is not yet supported.
- SSE support was removed in the latest major versions. Apps that need SSE must use the previous major version.
- AWS recommends the Agent Toolkit for AWS, the successor project, for production agent work. Useful projects will move there over time.
- Some releases include breaking changes to individual servers, such as the documentdb and aws-documentation servers.
