VoltAgent review

VoltAgent is an AI agent engineering platform built on an open-source TypeScript framework, with the VoltOps Console for observability and deployment.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 22, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

VoltAgent is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents with memory, tools, RAG, MCP, voice, and workflows. It is for TypeScript developers building single or multi-agent systems. It pairs the framework with VoltOps Console, available as cloud or self-hosted, for tracing, evals, prompts, and deployment.

What VoltAgent does

  • VoltAgent defines agents with typed roles, tools, memory, and model providers in one place through @voltagent/core.
  • VoltAgent runs teams of specialized agents under a supervisor runtime that routes tasks between sub-agents.
  • VoltAgent describes multi-step workflows declaratively, including human-in-the-loop steps with suspend and resume.
  • VoltAgent ships Zod-typed tools with lifecycle hooks and cancellation, and connects to Model Context Protocol servers.
  • VoltAgent swaps between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or other providers by changing config instead of agent logic.
  • VoltAgent supports durable memory adapters, resumable streaming, RAG retrievers, guardrails, evals, and voice through OpenAI or ElevenLabs.
  • VoltAgent's VoltOps Console provides traces, logs, dashboards, a prompt builder, triggers and actions, and deployment.

How it works

You scaffold a project with the create-voltagent-app CLI, then register agents and workflows in a VoltAgent instance with a Hono server. Running the dev command compiles the code with tsx and starts an HTTP server on localhost:3141. You test agents and run workflows from VoltOps Console in the browser, which shows logs for each step.

How to install and start using VoltAgent

Create a new project

npm create voltagent-app@latest

Run the dev server

npm run dev

Requirements

  • An account or API key for your chosen model provider, such as OpenAI

First steps

  1. Run the create-voltagent-app CLI and follow the setup prompts. Starter code appears in src/index.ts.
  2. Navigate to the project and run npm run dev to start the VoltAgent server on localhost:3141.
  3. Open the VoltOps Console link from the terminal, select your agent, and chat with it.
  4. Run the included Expense Approval Workflow from the console Workflows page with a JSON input.

Who VoltAgent is for

  • TypeScript developers building AI agents who want full code control
  • Teams building multi-agent systems with supervisor coordination
  • Developers who need tracing, evals, and deployment for agents in production
  • Workflows with human approval steps that suspend and resume

Limitations to know

  • VoltAgent is a TypeScript and JavaScript framework. The sources describe no SDK for other languages.
  • The VoltAgent Knowledge Base is a managed RAG service, not part of the self-run open-source framework.
  • VoltAgent's Marketplace and no-code Agent Builder are listed as coming soon.

What is VoltAgent?

VoltAgent is an AI agent engineering platform with two parts. One is an open-source TypeScript framework for agents with memory, RAG, tools, MCP, voice, and workflows. The other is VoltOps Console, a cloud or self-hosted console for observability, automation, deployment, evals, and prompts.

Which LLM providers does VoltAgent support?

VoltAgent supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other providers. You switch providers by changing configuration rather than rewriting agent logic. The starter code uses openai("gpt-4o-mini") from @ai-sdk/openai.

Can VoltOps Console be self-hosted?

Yes. VoltOps Console is offered both as a cloud service and as a self-hosted option, according to the README and homepage.

Does VoltAgent support MCP?

Yes. VoltAgent connects to Model Context Protocol servers without extra glue code. Version 2.10.0 of @voltagent/core added type-safe MCP annotations and metadata for tools. A separate @voltagent/mcp-docs-server gives coding assistants like Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf access to VoltAgent docs.

How does VoltAgent store agent memory?

VoltAgent uses in-memory storage by default. You can attach durable memory adapters, such as the LibSQL adapter shown in the starter code, so agents remember context across runs.
