What GPT4All does
- GPT4All runs large language models locally on Windows, macOS, and Linux without API calls or a GPU.
- GPT4All includes LocalDocs, a feature for privately and locally chatting with your own documents.
- GPT4All supports GPU inference on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs through Nomic Vulkan, plus a CUDA backend.
- GPT4All can connect to remote model providers such as Groq, OpenAI, and Mistral from the Add Model page.
- GPT4All supports DeepSeek-R1 distillations and shows their reasoning, which is wrapped in think tags.
- GPT4All's Reasoner v1 includes a built-in JavaScript code interpreter tool for reasoning tasks.
- GPT4All offers a Python client for loading GGUF models and generating text in chat sessions.
How it works
GPT4All is used either as a desktop chat application, installed with the Windows, Windows ARM, macOS, or Ubuntu installers, or as a Python package. The Python client wraps llama.cpp implementations and downloads GGUF models on first use. GPT4All integrates with LangChain, Weaviate, and OpenLIT. An earlier Docker-based API server offered an OpenAI-compatible HTTP endpoint.
How to install and start using GPT4All
With pip
pip install gpt4allRequirements
- Python 3.8 or newer for the gpt4all Python package.
- Windows and Linux builds require an Intel Core i3 2nd Gen or AMD Bulldozer processor, or better.
- The macOS build requires Monterey 12.6 or newer. Apple Silicon M-series processors give the best results.
- The Windows ARM build supports Qualcomm Snapdragon and Microsoft SQ1/SQ2 processors.
First steps
- Install the Python package with pip, or download the desktop installer for your operating system.
- In Python, import the GPT4All class and create a model, for example "Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct.Q4_0.gguf".
- GPT4All downloads and loads the model on first use. The example model is a 4.66GB download.
- Open a chat session with model.chat_session() and call model.generate with a prompt and max_tokens.
Who GPT4All is for
- Developers who want to chat with LLMs on a laptop without sending data to a cloud API.
- Users who want to chat privately with their own local documents through LocalDocs.
- Python developers who want to call local GGUF models from scripts.
- Teams building LangChain or Weaviate pipelines that need a local model provider.
Limitations to know
- The GPT4All Linux build is x86-64 only. ARM Linux is not supported.
- On Windows ARM, GPT4All uses only the CPU. GPU and NPU acceleration are not available.
- Windows ARM devices need the separate Windows ARM build. The standard Windows version will not work there.
- Local models are large downloads. The example Llama 3 8B model is 4.66GB.
