Moli review
Moli is an open-source headless browser for AI agents, built in Rust, that fetches, extracts, and automates web pages through CLI, CDP, and WebDriver.
TL;DR
Moli is a standalone headless browser kernel written in Rust, not a Chromium wrapper. Moli is for developers building agents, crawlers, and retrieval pipelines who need page structure more than pixels. Moli skips layout and paint by default and runs visual work only when a request needs it.

What Moli does
- Moli fetches pages and exports them as HTML, Markdown, JSON, or a compact semantic text tree for models.
- Moli serves CDP, WebDriver Classic, and WebDriver BiDi from one endpoint, so Playwright can connect over CDP.
- Moli produces viewport screenshots, full-page PNGs, and paginated PDFs when you enable on-demand layout with --layout.
- Moli runs a JavaScript expression before export with --eval, so you can click or interact before dumping a page.
- Moli runs real JavaScript through V8, with DOM, CSS cascade, Fetch/XHR/WebSocket, cookies, WebCrypto, and profile-scoped storage.
- Moli supports profiles, proxies, HTTP cache, resource families, timeouts, user-agent overrides, and network diagnostics.
How it works
Moli runs as a single binary. Use `moli fetch` for one-off extraction, or `moli serve` to start an automation server that speaks CDP, WebDriver Classic, and WebDriver BiDi. It treats the native DOM and style state as the source of truth and triggers layout or software paint only for operations that need them. Lexmount Browser offers a managed cloud runtime built around Moli.
How to install and start using Moli
On Windows (PowerShell)
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://github.com/lexmount/moli/releases/latest/download/moli-installer.ps1 | iex"Requirements
- Linux, macOS, or Windows.
- No separate ChromeDriver, geckodriver, or browser installation is required.
- No Lexmount account is needed; the open-source browser is fully usable without Lexmount Browser.
First steps
- Install the prebuilt Moli binary with the installer script for your operating system.
- Run `moli fetch --dump markdown --wait-until done https://example.com` to render a page as Markdown.
- Start the automation server with `moli serve`, adding `--layout` if you need geometry or screenshots.
- Connect Playwright with chromium.connectOverCDP("http://127.0.0.1:9222") and drive pages as usual.
Who Moli is for
- Developers building browser-use agents that need DOM, text, links, and forms rather than pixel-perfect rendering.
- Crawling and web-scraping pipelines that extract Markdown or structured content from JavaScript-heavy pages.
- Retrieval pipelines, evaluation environments, and reinforcement-learning workloads that run many browser sessions.
- Teams with existing Playwright or WebDriver scripts that want a lighter local browser endpoint.
Limitations to know
- Moli does not aim for pixel-for-pixel parity with Chrome and lacks high-fidelity Canvas, WebGL, and media playback.
- Moli has no GUI browser, persistent window, or GPU compositor.
- Moli does not implement every Chrome screenshot or print mode; unsupported protocol paths return explicit errors.
- Lexmount suggests Chromium instead for persistent contexts, extensions, and compatibility-sensitive visual tasks on its cloud service.

Moli FAQ
Is Moli free and open source?
Yes. Moli's source code is on GitHub (lexmount/moli) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free. Its website also links to a pricing page (https://browser.lexmount.com/pricing) for any paid plans.
How do I install Moli?
Run powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://github.com/lexmount/moli/releases/latest/download/moli-installer.ps1 | iex". The install section above has the other options from the project's README.
Is Moli still maintained?
Yes. The lexmount/moli repository was last updated on Nov 1, 2026, and the latest release, v1.1.20 on GitHub, came out on Oct 30, 2026.
How popular is Moli?
Moli has 21.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1.4k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 1.8k a week. That made it #2 among browser and computer-use agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.
What are the best alternatives to Moli?
Other browser and computer-use agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: ego lite (#1), Cua (#3), Browser Harness (#4), Jev Ultrafast (#5), Stagehand (#6). The alternatives table above has their numbers.
Is Moli a Chromium wrapper?
No. Moli is a standalone browser kernel built in Rust. It uses libcurl for networking, html5ever for parsing, V8 for JavaScript, Servo/Stylo for styles, Taffy and Parley for layout, and a CPU software renderer.
Can I use Moli with Playwright?
Yes. Start moli serve, then connect Playwright over CDP with chromium.connectOverCDP("http://127.0.0.1:9222"). The same endpoint also serves WebDriver Classic and WebDriver BiDi.
Can Moli take screenshots and PDFs?
Yes, with --layout enabled. Moli can write viewport PNGs, full-document PNGs, and paginated PDFs. By default Moli skips real layout and paint to save resources.
Do I need Lexmount's cloud service to use Moli?
No. Moli is Lexmount's open-source headless browser and is fully usable on its own. Lexmount Browser is a separate managed cloud runtime built around Moli.
How does Moli keep resource use low?
Moli reads DOM and runtime state directly for extraction and scripting. It runs layout only for geometry requests and paints only for screenshots. Expensive options such as layout and media resources require explicit opt-in.
