Genkit review
Genkit is an open-source framework from Google for building AI-powered and agentic apps in JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Python, and Dart.
TL;DR
Genkit is an open-source framework for building full-stack AI applications, built and used in production by Google's Firebase. It is for developers who want one interface to models from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, and other providers. It also includes a local CLI and Developer UI for testing and tracing, plus production monitoring.

What Genkit does
- Genkit provides a unified interface to models from providers like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Ollama.
- Genkit supports text and image generation, type-safe structured output, tool calling, and prompt templating.
- Genkit builds AI workflows (flows), persisted chat interfaces, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
- Genkit includes a local Developer UI to run flows and prompts, inspect execution traces, and review evaluation results.
- Genkit tracks model performance, request volume, latency, and error rates in a production monitoring dashboard.
- Genkit provides client SDKs and helpers for Next.js, React, Angular, iOS, and Android.
- Genkit JS 1.43.0 lets agent runs resume after a failure and hands work to sub-agents that run in the background.
How it works
Genkit runs server-side as an SDK in your chosen language. You initialize it with model-provider plugins, such as googleAI(), and call generate(). The Genkit CLI wraps your code with genkit start, which adds telemetry and the Developer UI. You can deploy to Cloud Functions for Firebase, Google Cloud Run, or any environment that supports your language. You then monitor the app in the Firebase console.
How to install and start using Genkit
With npm (JavaScript/TypeScript)
npm i genkit @genkit-ai/google-genaiWith Go
go get github.com/firebase/genkit/[email protected]Genkit CLI
npm install -g genkit-cliRequirements
- Genkit needs an API key from your chosen model provider. Some providers, like Vertex AI, use a different means of authentication.
- The Genkit CLI is installed through npm.
First steps
- Choose a Genkit SDK and a model provider, such as Google Gemini or Anthropic, and get an API key.
- Install the SDK, a model-provider package, and the Genkit CLI.
- Import Genkit and the provider plugin, initialize Genkit with your provider API key, and call ai.generate().
- Run your code with genkit start to test prompts and flows in the Developer UI.
Who Genkit is for
- Developers building chatbots, automations, or recommendation systems that need tool calling and structured output.
- Teams working in TypeScript or Go who want SDKs labeled production-ready.
- Developers on Firebase or Google Cloud who want to deploy and monitor AI features in production.
- Developers who want to switch between model providers through one interface.
Limitations to know
- Genkit's Python SDK is in Beta and approaching production-readiness, not yet production-ready.
- Genkit's Dart SDK is in Preview, with early development and core functionality only.
- Genkit is designed for server-side deployment. Client apps integrate through separate helpers and client SDKs.
- Genkit's built-in production monitoring runs in the Firebase console.
