faster-whisper review

faster-whisper is a Python reimplementation of OpenAI's Whisper speech-to-text model built on the CTranslate2 inference engine for Transformer models.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 22, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

faster-whisper is a Python library that transcribes audio with Whisper models through CTranslate2. It is for developers who need speech-to-text on CPU or NVIDIA GPU. The README says it is up to 4 times faster than openai/whisper at the same accuracy, uses less memory, and supports 8-bit quantization.

What faster-whisper does

  • faster-whisper transcribes audio files with Whisper models and reports the detected language and its probability.
  • faster-whisper supports 8-bit quantization on both CPU and GPU to improve efficiency.
  • faster-whisper offers batched transcription through BatchedInferencePipeline, a drop-in replacement for WhisperModel.transcribe.
  • faster-whisper can return word-level timestamps when transcribe is called with word_timestamps=True.
  • faster-whisper integrates the Silero VAD model to filter out parts of the audio without speech.
  • faster-whisper runs Distil-Whisper checkpoints such as distil-large-v3, and version 1.2.0 added support for distil-large-v3.5.
  • faster-whisper can load converted Whisper models, including user fine-tuned models compatible with the Transformers library.

How it works

faster-whisper is a Python library. You create a WhisperModel with a model size, a device (cuda or cpu) and a compute type, then call transcribe on an audio file. Named models are downloaded automatically from the Hugging Face Hub as CTranslate2 models. Audio is decoded with PyAV, which bundles the FFmpeg libraries. GPU runs use NVIDIA cuBLAS and cuDNN.

How to install and start using faster-whisper

With pip

pip install faster-whisper

Master branch

pip install --force-reinstall "faster-whisper @ https://github.com/SYSTRAN/faster-whisper/archive/refs/heads/master.tar.gz"

Requirements

  • Python 3.9 or greater.
  • GPU execution requires NVIDIA cuBLAS for CUDA 12 and cuDNN 9 for CUDA 12.
  • FFmpeg does not need to be installed on the system, because PyAV bundles the FFmpeg libraries.

First steps

  1. Install the package with pip, using Python 3.9 or later.
  2. Create a model, for example WhisperModel("large-v3", device="cuda", compute_type="float16"), or use device="cpu" with compute_type="int8".
  3. Call model.transcribe("audio.mp3", beam_size=5) and iterate over the returned segments to run the transcription.
  4. Add vad_filter=True or word_timestamps=True to transcribe when you need silence filtering or word timings.

Who faster-whisper is for

  • Python developers adding speech-to-text transcription to applications.
  • Teams running Whisper on limited GPU or CPU memory who can use int8 quantization.
  • Batch transcription of long audio files on NVIDIA GPUs.
  • Developers who need a backend for real-time or diarization tools, as projects like WhisperLive and WhisperX do.

Limitations to know

  • faster-whisper's latest ctranslate2 versions support only CUDA 12 and cuDNN 9. Older CUDA setups need a ctranslate2 downgrade.
  • faster-whisper returns segments as a generator, so transcription only runs when you iterate over them.
  • faster-whisper is a library with no command-line scripts of its own. CLI and server use comes from community projects.
  • faster-whisper's batched mode uses more memory than sequential mode in the README benchmarks.
