Cohere SDK review

Cohere SDK is a Python library for accessing Cohere models through the Cohere API and cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI.

Updated Nov 1, 2026. Review written Oct 22, 2026 from the project's own sources; usage data refreshed every Monday.

TL;DR

Cohere SDK is the official Python library for calling Cohere models such as Command and Embed. It is for Python developers building chat, embedding or rerank features. It works with the Cohere platform and with AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure, GCP and Oracle OCI.

What Cohere SDK does

  • Cohere SDK sends chat requests to Cohere models through a ClientV2 client.
  • Cohere SDK supports streaming chat responses with chat_stream, yielding content-delta events.
  • Cohere SDK creates embeddings with the embed method, including on Oracle OCI Generative AI.
  • Cohere SDK connects to Cohere models on AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, Azure, GCP and Oracle OCI.
  • Cohere SDK version 7.3.0 adds a relevant_spans parameter for Rerank models.
  • Cohere SDK version 7.1.0 added support for the /parse endpoint.
  • Cohere SDK lets you pass max_retries through the Client and ClientV2 constructors.

How it works

Cohere SDK is imported in Python code, where you create a client such as cohere.ClientV2() and call methods like chat, chat_stream or embed. The client reads your API key from the CO_API_KEY environment variable. For Oracle OCI, OciClient or OciClientV2 authenticates with a config file, custom profile, session token, direct credentials or instance principal. The SDK code is generated programmatically with Fern.

How to install and start using Cohere SDK

With pip

pip install cohere

With OCI support

pip install 'cohere[oci]'

Requirements

  • Python 3.10 or later, below 4.0.
  • A Cohere API key, typically set as CO_API_KEY.
  • For OCI use, the OCI SDK extra and OCI credentials, such as ~/.oci/config.

First steps

  1. Install the package with pip install cohere.
  2. Set the CO_API_KEY environment variable in your shell profile so code can read your key.
  3. Create a client with cohere.ClientV2() and call co.chat with a model and messages.
  4. Use co.chat_stream and print content-delta events to stream responses.

Who Cohere SDK is for

  • Python developers adding chat or embeddings with Cohere models to applications.
  • Teams running Cohere models on AWS, Azure, GCP or Oracle OCI.
  • Developers building search or retrieval features with Cohere embed and rerank endpoints.

Limitations to know

  • Cohere SDK on OCI on-demand inference does not support the Generate or Rerank APIs without fine-tuning and a dedicated endpoint.
  • Cohere SDK on OCI on-demand allows only one embedding type per request, not float and int8 together.
  • Cohere SDK code is generated, so direct code pull requests cannot be merged as-is.

Cohere SDK FAQ

Is Cohere SDK free and open source?

Yes. Cohere SDK's source code is on GitHub (cohere-ai/cohere-python) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

How do I install Cohere SDK?

Run pip install cohere. It needs Node.js >=18.0.0. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

Is Cohere SDK still maintained?

Yes. The cohere-ai/cohere-python repository was last updated on Oct 21, 2026, and the latest release, 7.3.0 on GitHub, came out on Oct 21, 2026.

How popular is Cohere SDK?

Cohere SDK has 407 GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 1 a week. Its main package had about 3.3M downloads that week, +4% against its own 4-week average. That made it #20 among LLM SDKs and gateways on the Devtoolwatch Board.

What are the best alternatives to Cohere SDK?

Other LLM SDKs and gateways on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: thinking-orbs (#1), Headroom (#2), LiteLLM (#3), Honcho (#4), Anthropic SDK (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

Does Cohere SDK support streaming?

Yes. Cohere SDK supports streaming endpoints. For chat, call chat_stream and iterate over events, printing text from content-delta events.

How do I avoid putting my API key in code with Cohere SDK?

Set the CO_API_KEY environment variable, for example in ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc, then open a new terminal. Cohere SDK clients will read the key from it.

Which Cohere APIs work on Oracle OCI with Cohere SDK?

Cohere SDK supports Embed and Chat on OCI, with Chat available through OciClient (V1) and OciClientV2 (V2), including streaming. Generate and Rerank require fine-tuning and a dedicated endpoint first.

How does Cohere SDK authenticate with OCI?

Cohere SDK supports five OCI methods: the default config file, a custom profile, session-based security tokens, direct credentials, and instance principal for OCI Compute instances.

Which platforms can Cohere SDK reach?

Cohere SDK accesses Cohere models on the Cohere platform, AWS Bedrock and SageMaker, Azure, GCP and Oracle OCI.
