# magpie review

> magpie is a local gateway and app that lets coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI use any provider's model.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/yetone-magpie/

## TL;DR

magpie runs a local gateway that translates between OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini APIs, so any supported agent can use any provider's model or subscription. It is for developers who use more than one agent, provider or account. It adds failover when a quota runs out, optional privacy masking and routing groups.

## What magpie does

- magpie lets you pick any model for any agent from one list and edits only the relevant key in the agent's config.
- magpie lets agents use API keys, local models, or Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Grok plans you are signed in to.
- magpie fails over to a provider's next account, or to another model in a routing group, when a quota runs out.
- magpie can mask keys, passwords and emails in prompts on your computer and restore them in replies, once enabled.
- magpie offers routing groups with smart, order, rotate, usage and pace modes, plus optional intent routing.
- magpie tracks tokens, cost, quota windows, sessions and context use, with OTLP export.
- magpie supports plugins and JavaScript gateway middleware that can rewrite or reject requests.

### How it works

magpie runs a gateway at 127.0.0.1:3425 that speaks OpenAI Chat, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages and Gemini, translating between them with streaming, tool calls and reasoning. You control it from a menu bar app, window, TUI, web UI or CLI. It rewrites each agent's config to point at the gateway. Other tools that accept a base URL can use it too.

## How to install magpie

**With the install script**

```
curl -fsSL https://usemagpie.ai/install.sh | sh
```

**With Go**

```
go install github.com/yetone/magpie@latest
```

### Requirements

- macOS 12 or later, Windows or Linux; also runs in Docker and on Termux.
- The Linux desktop app needs GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1.
- A provider API key, local model, or signed-in subscription for each provider you add.
- Plugins run on Bun, which is downloaded the first time a plugin needs it.

### First steps

1. Open magpie, go to Providers → Add provider, pick a preset and paste a key or sign in with a subscription.
2. Pick a model for each agent on the Agents page, then start a new agent session.
3. From the terminal, add a provider with magpie provider add and assign a model with magpie claude or magpie codex.

## Who magpie is for

- Developers who use more than one coding agent, provider or account.
- Developers who want to run Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI on other vendors' models.
- Teams who want to share providers on a local network with per-key token and cost limits.

### Limitations

- magpie is not needed if you use one agent on its vendor's own plan.
- magpie cannot fail over with only one account and no routing group; the error reaches the agent.
- magpie's masking hides values from the model, so tasks about a masked value itself cannot be done unless you mark it Never mask.
- magpie's local masking model for names and addresses is a 1.6 GB download that runs on the CPU.

## magpie FAQ

### Is magpie free and open source?

Yes. magpie's source code is on GitHub (yetone/magpie) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install magpie?

Run `curl -fsSL https://usemagpie.ai/install.sh | sh`. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is magpie still maintained?

Yes. The yetone/magpie repository was last updated on Nov 1, 2026, and the latest release, v0.1.2652 on GitHub, came out on Nov 1, 2026.

### How popular is magpie?

magpie has 26.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 6.3k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 4.5k a week. That made it #2 among LLM inference and training tools on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to magpie?

Other LLM inference and training tools on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: dsh-our-free-model (#1), Strata (#3), edge0 (#4), OmniRoute (#5), CLIProxyAPI (#6). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### Which agents does magpie support?

magpie supports many agents, including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Cursor CLI, Copilot CLI, Zed, VS Code Chat, Goose, Cline and Droid. It shows only agents installed on your machine. Any other tool that takes a base URL can use the gateway.

### Does magpie read my agents' sign-ins?

magpie reads agent sign-ins, such as Claude Code's and Codex's files and the Keychain, to find subscriptions. Turn this off in Settings → Privacy → Subscription accounts, or run magpie accounts discovery off. MAGPIE_NO_ACCOUNTS=1 disables it for one run.

### Is magpie's privacy masking on by default?

magpie's masking is off by default; enable it in Settings → Privacy. Masked values are held in memory only. If masking is on and cannot run, the request is held back with a 503 instead of sent as written.

### How do I point another tool at the magpie gateway?

magpie's gateway listens at 127.0.0.1:3425. Set OPENAI_BASE_URL to http://127.0.0.1:3425/v1, or ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL or GOOGLE_GEMINI_BASE_URL to http://127.0.0.1:3425, with the API key set to magpie.

### Which providers can magpie use?

magpie has presets for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Vertex AI, Amazon Bedrock, DeepSeek, Kimi, Zhipu GLM, Qwen, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio and others. It also accepts any OpenAI- or Anthropic-compatible URL.
