# Spec Kit review

> Spec Kit is an open source toolkit from GitHub that gives AI coding agents structured processes, reusable templates, and documented outcomes.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/spec-kit/

## TL;DR

Spec Kit is an open source toolkit that gives AI coding agents structured processes such as Spec-Driven Development, bug fixing, and idea assessment. It is for developers who want intent and evidence recorded before implementation. Each phase produces a Markdown artifact. You can customize the process with presets, extensions, workflows, and bundles, or bring your own.

## What Spec Kit does

- Spec Kit runs Spec-Driven Development: constitution, specify, plan, tasks, implement, and converge, with each phase producing a Markdown artifact.
- Spec Kit offers a bug-fixing extension that assesses the cause, applies a scoped fix, and records verification as verified, partial, or failed.
- Spec Kit offers an idea assessment extension that gathers evidence and ends in a go, needs-clarification, or kill decision.
- Spec Kit connects to many coding agents through integrations and includes a generic integration for agents that are not listed.
- Spec Kit lets teams adapt templates and methodology with presets, add commands with extensions, and automate steps with workflows.
- Spec Kit packages extensions, presets, workflows, and workflow steps into shareable bundles and supports private, self-hosted catalogs.
- Spec Kit works offline or behind a firewall using local sources and self-hosted catalogs.

### How it works

Spec Kit installs the Specify CLI with uv. The specify init command creates a project and sets up command files and directories for your chosen coding agent. You then run Spec Kit skills such as /speckit-specify in the agent's chat, not the terminal. You run them one at a time and review each result. The outputs are Markdown artifacts stored in the project.

## How to install Spec Kit

**With uv**

```
uv tool install specify-cli
```

**Pinned release with uv**

```
uv tool install specify-cli --from git+https://github.com/github/spec-kit.git@v1.2.3
```

### Requirements

- Python 3.11+
- uv
- A supported AI coding agent
- Linux, macOS, or Windows

### First steps

1. Create a project for your agent, for example: specify init my-project --integration copilot
2. Change into the project directory and launch your coding agent there.
3. Run /speckit-constitution once per project to set principles such as code quality and testing.
4. For each feature, run /speckit-specify, /speckit-plan, /speckit-tasks, /speckit-implement, and /speckit-converge, reviewing each result.

## Who Spec Kit is for

- Developers who want an AI coding agent to work from a written specification and plan
- Teams that need to enforce organizational or regulatory standards in agent-driven development
- Organizations working offline or behind firewalls with curated, self-hosted component catalogs
- Product teams that want an evidence-backed decision before investing in an idea

### Limitations

- Spec Kit is not a coding agent itself. It requires a separate supported AI coding agent to run its skills.
- Spec Kit catalog listings are not audits or endorsements, so you should review community source code before installing or running it.
- Spec Kit skills run one at a time in the agent chat and expect you to review each result before continuing.
- Spec Kit's assessment process does not start implementation automatically, even after a go decision.

## Spec Kit FAQ

### Is Spec Kit free and open source?

Yes. Spec Kit's source code is on GitHub (github/spec-kit) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install Spec Kit?

Run `uv tool install specify-cli`. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Spec Kit still maintained?

Yes. The github/spec-kit repository was last updated on Oct 23, 2026, and the latest release, v1.2.3 on GitHub, came out on Oct 22, 2026.

### How popular is Spec Kit?

Spec Kit has 144.4k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1.9k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 1.6k a week. That made it #23 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to Spec Kit?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### Is Spec Kit from GitHub?

Yes. Spec Kit is published in the github/spec-kit repository, which is owned by the GitHub organization. Its homepage is titled GitHub Spec Kit.

### Does Spec Kit work with Claude Code, Codex, or other agents?

Yes. Spec Kit's integrations cover Copilot, Gemini, Codex, Kilo Code, Zed, Claude, Forge, Kiro, and more. You can switch agents with a single command, and a generic integration covers agents that are not listed. Run specify init with your chosen agent to set up its command files.

### How do I use Spec Kit with GitHub Copilot?

Spec Kit's README uses Copilot as its example. Run specify init my-project --integration copilot, then open Copilot in the project. Type skills such as /speckit-specify in Copilot's chat, one at a time.

### Can I use Spec Kit on an existing project?

Yes. Spec Kit has an existing-projects guide for starting with code you already have. The homepage points teams adding Spec Kit to an established codebase to that guide.

### Is Spec Kit a framework I must follow end to end?

No. Spec Kit's processes are independent entry points, not mandatory phases. Spec-Driven Development ships in core, while bug fixing and assessment are opt-in extensions. You can also replace the process entirely, including with processes beyond software development.

### Is Spec Kit open source?

Yes. The README describes Spec Kit as an open source toolkit.
