## TL;DR

Pipecat is an open-source Python framework for real-time voice and multimodal AI agents. It is for developers building voice assistants, support bots, companions, or multi-agent systems. It composes pluggable speech, LLM, and transport services into streaming pipelines, and it ships a CLI that scaffolds projects for coding assistants.

## What Pipecat does

- Pipecat integrates speech recognition, text-to-speech, and conversation handling into streaming conversation pipelines built from modular components.
- Pipecat lets you swap speech, language, and vision services from many integrated providers, usually with one line of code.
- Pipecat supports multi-agent systems where each pipeline is an agent, composed through handoff, parallel fan-out, sidecar workers, or distributed deployments.
- Pipecat connects agents over transports such as Daily WebRTC, LiveKit, FastAPI WebSocket, WhatsApp, and local audio.
- Pipecat Flows, built into Pipecat, handles predefined or dynamic conversation paths with state management.
- Pipecat handles interruptions, turn detection, and context management, and reports metrics, traces, and OpenTelemetry data.
- Pipecat accepts files and images sent by clients and adds them to the LLM context, as of v1.13.0.

### How it works

Pipecat runs as a Python process. It streams frames through a pipeline of services, and no stage waits on the one before it. You compose speech-to-text, LLM, and text-to-speech or speech-to-speech services, then connect a transport such as WebRTC or WebSockets. Clients connect through official SDKs for JavaScript, React, React Native, Swift, Kotlin, C++, and ESP32.

## How to install Pipecat

**Add to a project with uv**

```
uv add pipecat-ai
```

**Install the CLI with uv**

```
uv tool install "pipecat-ai[cli]"
```

### First steps

1. Run `pipecat init quickstart` or follow the quickstart guide in the documentation.
2. Run `pipecat init` and choose either to build with a coding agent or to scaffold a runnable bot right away.
3. Pipecat init registers the Context Hub MCP server so your coding agent uses current Pipecat APIs.
4. Use the Pipecat CLI to monitor your agent and deploy it to production.

## Who Pipecat is for

- Python developers building real-time voice assistants or phone and support bots
- Teams building multi-agent voice systems with handoffs and parallel specialists
- Developers who want to mix and swap speech and LLM providers in one pipeline
- Projects that need multimodal input such as voice, video, and images

### Limitations

- Pipecat's server framework is Python-only and requires Python 3.11 or later.
- Pipecat orchestrates external AI services, so speech and model quality depend on the providers you choose.
- Pipecat file messages raise errors for MIME types an LLM adapter does not support.

### What is Pipecat?

Pipecat is an open-source Python framework for building real-time voice and multimodal conversational agents. Daily maintains it together with the community.

### What is Pipecat used for?

Pipecat is used to build voice assistants, multi-agent systems, AI companions, multimodal interfaces, interactive storytelling, business agents such as customer intake and support bots, and complex dialog systems.

### How does Pipecat work?

Pipecat streams frames through a pipeline of modular services as they are produced, so an agent can start responding while the user is still talking. You compose speech, LLM, and TTS services and connect a transport such as WebRTC or WebSockets.

### What is Pipecat Flows?

Pipecat Flows is built into Pipecat. It handles predefined or dynamic conversation paths with state management, for conversations that need to follow a defined path.

### What is Pipecat Cloud?

Pipecat Cloud is a managed option that runs, scales, and observes your Pipecat agents, so you do not manage the infrastructure. You can also self-host Pipecat anywhere Python runs.

### Is Pipecat open source?

Pipecat is open source. The framework's GitHub repository describes it as an open-source framework for voice agents, multimodal apps, and realtime AI.
