# OpenDesign review

> OpenDesign is an open-source, local-first AI design workspace that uses your coding agent to create prototypes, decks, images, and motion videos.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/nexu-io-open-design/

## TL;DR

OpenDesign is an Apache-2.0 design agent workspace where a coding agent like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor turns a brief into prototypes that follow your design system. OpenDesign is for developers and teams who want design work inside their existing agent setup. OpenDesign does not ship its own agent and supports BYOK model access.

## What OpenDesign does

- OpenDesign generates single-page HTML prototypes for web, desktop, and mobile that read your DESIGN.md and render in a sandboxed iframe.
- OpenDesign creates slide decks that export to HTML, PDF, PPTX, ZIP, or Markdown.
- OpenDesign builds motion graphics through HyperFrames, which renders agent-written HTML, CSS, and GSAP to MP4 via headless Chrome and FFmpeg.
- OpenDesign lets teammates comment on shared prototypes, then sends those comments to your agent as one revision task.
- OpenDesign can refactor components in an existing git repo to match a DESIGN.md brand spec.
- OpenDesign supports editing generated output directly, including moving, resizing, text, color, and spacing changes without regenerating.

### How it works

OpenDesign runs as a desktop app, in Docker, or inside a coding agent as a skill, plugin, or MCP server. OpenDesign uses agent CLIs already on your PATH as the design engine. OpenDesign can also launch DeepSeek Harness natively. Without a CLI, a BYOK proxy calls Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure, Google, Ollama, or OpenAI-compatible endpoints. OpenDesign Cloud offers hosted models.

## How to install OpenDesign

**Into your coding agent via MCP**

```
od mcp install
```

**Hosted install script**

```
curl -fsSL https://open-design.ai/install.sh | sh -s
```

**For Claude Code**

```
od mcp install claude
```

### Requirements

- For Local CLI mode, a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex installed and signed in.
- For BYOK mode, your own API key, endpoint, and model for a supported provider.
- Prebuilt desktop apps cover macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows x64. Linux users must run from source.

### First steps

1. Download the OpenDesign desktop app for macOS or Windows, which auto-detects coding-agent CLIs on your PATH.
2. Choose a design system and type a brief describing the screens in the entry view.
3. In an agent, ask: Use open-design to generate a landing page with the Linear design system.
4. Share the prototype to your team workspace, collect comments, and send them back to your agent for revision.

## Who OpenDesign is for

- Developers who already use Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or Copilot and want design output from those agents.
- Teams that want to share prototypes, collect comments, and iterate in one workspace.
- Developers who need on-brand prototypes driven by a DESIGN.md design system.
- Builders producing decks or MP4 motion graphics from code.

### Limitations

- OpenDesign publishes no prebuilt Linux desktop release. Linux users must run from source.
- On macOS and WSL2, the system /usr/bin/od command can shadow OpenDesign's od command.
- OpenDesign has scrubbed safety and reliability telemetry always on. Analytics and session replay are consent-gated.
- Automatic MCP configuration for Claude Desktop works only on macOS and Windows.

## OpenDesign FAQ

### Is OpenDesign free and open source?

Yes. OpenDesign's source code is on GitHub (nexu-io/open-design) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free. Its website also links to a pricing page (https://open-design.ai/pricing/) for any paid plans.

### How do I install OpenDesign?

Run `od mcp install`. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is OpenDesign still maintained?

Yes. The nexu-io/open-design repository was last updated on Nov 1, 2026, and the latest release, open-design-v0.26.1 on GitHub, came out on Oct 22, 2026.

### How popular is OpenDesign?

OpenDesign has 105.2k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1.5k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 1.8k a week. That made it #20 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to OpenDesign?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### How does OpenDesign work?

OpenDesign uses a coding agent already on your computer, a BYOK model, or OpenDesign Cloud to turn a brief into files. The agent combines a skill or template with your DESIGN.md and writes project files, and OpenDesign previews them live.

### Can OpenDesign be used without an OpenDesign account?

Yes. OpenDesign's Local CLI and BYOK modes require no OpenDesign account. Your agent's subscription or your model provider bills the usage, and no OpenDesign credits are used.

### How do I use OpenDesign with OpenCode?

OpenDesign connects to OpenCode through MCP. Run od mcp install opencode, then ask the agent to use open-design for your design task.

### Does OpenDesign work in VS Code?

Yes. OpenDesign lists VS Code with GitHub Copilot as supported. Set it up with od mcp install copilot.

### Is OpenDesign safe to run?

OpenDesign projects can run locally or in your own deployment, and the BYOK proxy blocks internal IPs, link-local, and CGNAT addresses. Requests to cloud models and OpenDesign Cloud go to those services. Some scrubbed telemetry is always on.

### Is OpenDesign an alternative to Claude Design?

OpenDesign's homepage describes it as an open-source Claude Design alternative for prototypes, landing pages, dashboards, slides, and HTML video built with your own coding agent.
