# LocalAI review

> LocalAI is an open-source AI engine that runs LLMs, vision, voice, image and video models on any hardware, with no GPU required.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/localai/

## TL;DR

LocalAI is a self-hosted AI engine with OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and ElevenLabs-compatible APIs. It suits developers who want to run models on their own hardware and keep data on their infrastructure. A small core pulls each engine, such as llama.cpp, vLLM or MLX, as a separate backend only when a model needs it.

## What LocalAI does

- LocalAI serves drop-in OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and ElevenLabs-compatible APIs, so most existing clients need only a URL change.
- LocalAI runs text generation, audio transcription, speech synthesis, image generation, vision, embeddings and video behind one API.
- LocalAI pulls backends like llama.cpp, vLLM, whisper.cpp and MLX on demand, each in its own image.
- LocalAI includes built-in agents with tool use, RAG, MCP and skills, plus a terminal agent that asks approval before changing state.
- LocalAI supports multi-user setups with API key auth, user quotas and role-based access.
- LocalAI offers a distributed cluster mode with VRAM-aware routing, autoscaling, P2P and failover.
- LocalAI provides a Realtime API for speech-to-speech over WebRTC with tool calling.

### How it works

LocalAI runs as a server, typically in a Docker container exposing port 8080. You load models from its gallery, Hugging Face, the Ollama registry, OCI registries or a YAML config. LocalAI detects your GPU and downloads the matching backend. Clients connect through its OpenAI-compatible API, and switching a model's engine is one line in its config.

## How to install LocalAI

**Docker, CPU only**

```
docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 localai/localai:latest
```

**Docker, NVIDIA GPU (CUDA 12)**

```
docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 --gpus all localai/localai:latest-gpu-nvidia-cuda-12
```

**Docker, Vulkan GPU**

```
docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 localai/localai:latest-gpu-vulkan
```

### Requirements

- Runs on CPU only; optional GPU support for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon and Vulkan.
- Supports x86_64 and ARM64 architectures.
- A container runtime such as Docker or podman for the container install path.

### First steps

1. Start the LocalAI container with the Docker command for your hardware.
2. List gallery models with `local-ai models list` or browse models.localai.io.
3. Load a model, for example `local-ai run llama-3.2-1b-instruct:q4_k_m`.
4. In a second shell, run `local-ai chat --model llama-3.2-1b-instruct:q4_k_m` to use the terminal agent.

## Who LocalAI is for

- Developers who want a self-hosted replacement for OpenAI or Anthropic APIs without changing client code.
- Teams that need data to stay on their own infrastructure.
- Developers running models on machines without a GPU.
- Teams serving multiple users or spreading models across a cluster of machines.

### Limitations

- LocalAI's macOS DMG is not signed by Apple and requires removing the quarantine attribute after install.
- LocalAI's vllm.cpp backend was introduced as alpha development builds.
- LocalAI authentication is deny-by-default since 4.9.0, so every HTTP route requires credentials unless listed as public.
- A GPU is optional, but the homepage says it makes LocalAI faster.

## LocalAI FAQ

### Is LocalAI free and open source?

Yes. LocalAI's source code is on GitHub (mudler/LocalAI) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install LocalAI?

Run `docker run -ti --name local-ai -p 8080:8080 localai/localai:latest`. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is LocalAI still maintained?

Yes. The mudler/LocalAI repository was last updated on Oct 25, 2026, and the latest release, v4.12.1 on GitHub, came out on Oct 23, 2026.

### How popular is LocalAI?

LocalAI has 50.1k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 190 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 171 a week. That made it #20 among LLM inference and training tools on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### LocalAI vs Ollama: how do they compare?

LocalAI and Ollama are both tracked by Devtoolwatch as LLM inference and training tools. LocalAI has 50.1k GitHub stars and Ollama has 185.5k. Ollama is a tool for running and building with open AI models locally or in the cloud on macOS, Windows, and Linux. [Ollama review](https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/ollama/)

### LocalAI vs llama.cpp: how do they compare?

LocalAI and llama.cpp are both tracked by Devtoolwatch as LLM inference and training tools. LocalAI has 50.1k GitHub stars and llama.cpp has 133k. llama.cpp is a plain C/C++ library and set of tools for running LLM and VLM inference locally or in the cloud on many kinds of hardware.
