# Hypit review

> Hypit is an open-source language and system that lets coding agents like Claude Code and Codex clone or create videos as editable workflows.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/hypit-ai-hypit/

## TL;DR

Hypit gives AI coding agents a language and system for building videos from footage, captions, B-roll and effects, all anchored to words instead of seconds. It is for developers and marketers who want re-runnable video workflows that produce many variants. Generation models are optional, and you can bring your own model service.

## What Hypit does

- Hypit clones a reference video as a complete workflow, including footage, captions, B-roll and effects, not just a script breakdown.
- Hypit lets an agent write a video workflow from scratch based on a description, or start from a template.
- Hypit reuses a composition and existing material to generate variants, producing only the parts that change.
- Hypit can render captions, motion graphics and code-rendered visuals into a finished video without calling a generation model.
- Hypit anchors timing to words, so rewriting a line re-flows the timing, which supports localized versions.
- Hypit uses pluggable components, so you can swap the host without touching the captions, or write your own components.

### How it works

Hypit installs as a Skill for coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex. You invoke the /hypit skill in a project directory. The agent checks for the Hypit executable, requests credentials, generates material and builds the composition. Sources are written in SVML. Model services connect through HypiHub, your own API, or local models.

## How to install Hypit

**As an agent Skill**

```
npx skills add hypit-ai/hypit -g
```

### Requirements

- Node.js 22.15.0 or later for the @hypit/hypit package.
- A coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex, which has its own account and charges.
- Accounts with model services if you use generation models, such as HypiHub, your own API, or local models.

### First steps

1. Install the Hypit Skill globally with npx. On first use, your agent checks for the Hypit executable and helps prepare it.
2. Start a coding agent session in any empty or existing project directory.
3. Ask the /hypit skill to clone a reference video by giving it the file path and the content to replace.
4. Alternatively, describe a video without a reference, for example: Make a ranking video that puts Hypit in S tier.

## Who Hypit is for

- Teams producing paid social ads that need many hook variants from one structure.
- Creators cloning TikTok, Reel or Short formats with swapped hosts, products or languages.
- Developers building code-rendered videos locally without generation API calls.
- Producers of podcast, interview and AI UGC clips with word-level captions.

### Limitations

- Hypit depends on a coding agent and model services, which bill separately through their own accounts.
- Upgrading 0.3.0 project components to 0.3.1 may require SDK import and dependency updates.
- Third-party models and services used by Hypit may have their own terms.

## Hypit FAQ

### Is Hypit free and open source?

Hypit's code is on GitHub (hypit-ai/hypit), but the repository doesn't declare a standard open-source license. Check its license file before using it commercially. Its website links to a pricing page: https://hypit.ai/commercial/pricing/.

### How do I install Hypit?

Run `npx skills add hypit-ai/hypit -g`. It needs Node.js >=22.15.0. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Hypit still maintained?

Yes. The hypit-ai/hypit repository was last updated on Oct 24, 2026, and the latest release, v0.3.1 on GitHub, came out on Oct 9, 2026.

### How popular is Hypit?

Hypit has 27.1k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1.9k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 2.3k a week. Its main package had about 11.1k downloads that week, +20% against its own 4-week average. That made it #56 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to Hypit?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### Does Hypit require a video generation model?

No. Hypit workflows can compile captions, motion graphics and code-rendered visuals into a finished video without calling a generation model or incurring its charges.

### Which agents work with Hypit?

Hypit works with coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex through the /hypit skill. The homepage lists Claude, Codex and any agent.

### Can I use my own model API with Hypit?

Yes. HypiHub is the recommended hosted service, but you can use your own API or local models. Tell your agent the service name and API documentation so it can set up the connection.

### Do I need a reference video to use Hypit?

No. Hypit can start from a reference video, a template, or a plain description of the video you want, and the agent writes the workflow.

### Who owns videos made with Hypit?

The videos and other outputs you create with Hypit belong to you. Third-party models and services may have their own terms.
