### How it works

GitHub MCP Server runs in two ways. The remote server is hosted by GitHub at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ and connects over HTTP from MCP hosts such as VS Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Windsurf. The local server runs as the Docker image ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server. Both authenticate with OAuth or a GitHub personal access token. Toolsets control which tools are exposed, and defaults apply when none are set.

- An MCP host with remote server support, such as VS Code 1.101 or later, for the remote server.
- Docker installed and running, if you use the local server in a container.

1. Use the one-click install button in the README for VS Code, or add the remote server JSON config to your MCP host.
2. In VS Code, toggle Agent mode next to the Copilot Chat input to start the server.
3. Log in with OAuth on first use, or set GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN with only the scopes you need.
