# fal client review

> fal client is a Python package for calling fal model APIs or your own deployed fal endpoints, with a JavaScript and TypeScript counterpart.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/fal-client/

## TL;DR

fal client (fal-client) is the Python package for calling model APIs hosted on fal and your own deployed fal apps. It is for developers who want to call hosted image, video, audio and other generative models without managing infrastructure. A separate @fal-ai/client package covers JavaScript and TypeScript.

## What fal client does

- fal client calls fal model APIs from Python with a subscribe function that takes a model ID and arguments.
- fal client can call your own deployed fal apps when you pass your endpoint ID instead of a model ID.
- fal client gives access to fal's hosted models for image, video, audio, music, speech, 3D and real-time streaming.
- fal models support synchronous and async queue calls, and many also support streaming and real-time WebSocket connections.
- The @fal-ai/client package offers the same subscribe-style calls for JavaScript and TypeScript.

### How it works

fal client runs inside your Python code. You set your fal API key in the FAL_KEY environment variable, import fal_client, and call fal_client.subscribe with a model ID such as fal-ai/flux/schnell and its arguments. The client sends the request to fal's hosted API and returns the result, for example image URLs. The same call works with endpoint IDs of apps deployed with the fal package.

## How to install fal client

**With pip**

```
pip install fal-client
```

**From source (repository root)**

```
pip install -e 'projects/fal_client[dev]'
```

### Requirements

- A fal API key set in the FAL_KEY environment variable.
- Python 3.8 or later, per the fal-client package metadata.
- Node.js 18.0.0 or later for the JavaScript client @fal-ai/client.

### First steps

1. Install fal-client with pip.
2. Get an API key from fal and export it as FAL_KEY.
3. Pick a model from the fal Marketplace and note its model ID.
4. Call fal_client.subscribe with the model ID and arguments, then read the result, such as result["images"][0]["url"].

## Who fal client is for

- Python developers who want to call hosted generative models without running their own infrastructure.
- Teams that deploy their own apps with the fal package and need to call those endpoints from Python.
- JavaScript and TypeScript developers using the @fal-ai/client package.

### Limitations

- fal client requires a fal account API key for every request.
- The fal repository dropped Python 3.8 and 3.9 support in recent releases, though fal-client metadata still lists Python 3.8 or later.

## fal client FAQ

### Is fal client free and open source?

Yes. fal client's source code is on GitHub (fal-ai/fal) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free. Its website also links to a pricing page (https://fal.ai/docs/documentation/model-apis/pricing) for any paid plans.

### How do I install fal client?

Run `pip install fal-client`. It needs Node.js >=18.0.0. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is fal client still maintained?

Yes. The fal-ai/fal repository was last updated on Oct 21, 2026, and the latest release, fal_v1.82.1 on GitHub, came out on Oct 20, 2026.

### How popular is fal client?

fal client has 979 GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 5 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 3 a week. Its main package had about 3.1M downloads that week, +12% against its own 4-week average. That made it #11 among LLM SDKs and gateways on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to fal client?

Other LLM SDKs and gateways on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: thinking-orbs (#1), Headroom (#2), LiteLLM (#3), Honcho (#4), Anthropic SDK (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### What is the difference between fal and fal-client?

fal-client calls fal model APIs or your deployed endpoints from Python. The fal package is the SDK and CLI for building, testing and deploying serverless apps on fal.

### How does fal client authenticate?

fal client reads your fal API key from the FAL_KEY environment variable. Set it with export FAL_KEY="your-api-key" before making calls.

### Can fal client call my own deployed models?

Yes. fal client can call your own deployed fal apps when you pass your endpoint ID instead of a model ID to the call.

### Is there a JavaScript version of fal client?

Yes. The @fal-ai/client npm package is the fal.ai client for JavaScript and TypeScript. It requires Node.js 18.0.0 or later and uses fal.subscribe with an input object.

### Does fal support async or streaming calls?

Yes. Every fal model supports synchronous and async queue calls. Many models also support streaming and real-time WebSocket connections.
