## TL;DR

Desktop Commander is an MCP server that lets AI chat clients read and edit files, run terminal commands, and manage processes on your machine. It is for developers using Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or other MCP clients. It works on your real machine, not a cloud sandbox, and adds Excel, PDF, and DOCX handling plus a Remote MCP option.

## What Desktop Commander does

- Desktop Commander runs terminal commands with output streaming, timeouts, background execution, and session management for long-running commands.
- Desktop Commander lists and kills processes and interacts with running processes such as SSH sessions, databases, and development servers.
- Desktop Commander edits code with surgical text replacements, full file rewrites, and pattern-based replacements across multiple files.
- Desktop Commander searches files and content recursively using vscode-ripgrep, including Excel file content.
- Desktop Commander reads, writes, and edits Excel, PDF, and DOCX files without external tools.
- Desktop Commander executes Python, Node.js, and R code in memory without saving files, for tasks like analyzing CSV, JSON, or Excel data.
- Desktop Commander records tool calls and arguments locally, with recent history available through get_recent_tool_calls.

### How it works

Desktop Commander runs as a local MCP server, usually started through npx, and connects to any MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI. It is built on the MCP Filesystem Server. A Docker option runs it in a container with mounted folders. Remote MCP lets ChatGPT and Claude web reach a machine you connect.

## How to install Desktop Commander

**With npx for Claude Desktop**

```
npx @wonderwhy-er/desktop-commander@latest setup
```

**With Claude Code**

```
claude mcp add --scope user desktop-commander -- npx -y @wonderwhy-er/desktop-commander@latest
```

**With Codex**

```
codex mcp add desktop-commander -- npx -y @wonderwhy-er/desktop-commander@latest
```

### Requirements

- Node.js 22.12.0 or later for npx-based installs.
- An MCP-compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, or Claude Code.
- Docker Desktop installed and running for the Docker install option, which does not need Node.js.
- An email sign-in and a connected device for Remote MCP with ChatGPT or Claude web.

### First steps

1. Run the npx setup command, or add the standard JSON configuration to your MCP client's config file.
2. Restart Claude or your MCP client so it loads the Desktop Commander server.
3. Ask the AI to search, edit files, or run a terminal command on your machine.

## Who Desktop Commander is for

- Developers who want an AI chat client to run commands and edit code on their own machine.
- People checking servers, reading logs, or deploying changes from chat, including from a phone.
- Users working with Excel, PDF, or DOCX files through an AI assistant.

### Limitations

- Desktop Commander's safety guardrails are not a sandbox. It acts on your real files and terminal.
- Desktop Commander's guardrails are symlink traversal prevention and a command blocklist. Full isolation requires the Docker install.
- Desktop Commander's local checkout install does not auto-update and requires manual git pulls.
