# Composio review

> Composio is an SDK, CLI, and hosted MCP service that gives AI agents authenticated app toolkits, per-user sessions, triggers, and a sandbox.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/composio/

## TL;DR

Composio is a TypeScript and Python SDK, plus a CLI, for connecting AI agents to external apps. Composio handles per-user authentication, tool search, triggers, and sandboxed code execution. It is for developers building agents on frameworks like OpenAI Agents, Claude Agent SDK, Vercel AI SDK, or LangChain, and for anyone connecting through MCP.

## What Composio does

- Composio provides pre-authenticated toolkits that agents can use to take action across many apps.
- Composio scopes sessions to individual end users, with OAuth, API keys, and tokens refreshed automatically.
- Composio gives sessions meta tools that discover, authenticate, and execute app tools at runtime, so agents avoid loading hundreds of tool definitions.
- Composio exposes every session as a hosted MCP endpoint that Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client can use.
- Composio triggers let agents subscribe to events from toolkits, such as new Gmail messages or Linear issues.
- Composio offers a sandbox pre-wired with the user's connected accounts for running arbitrary code.
- Composio provider adapters convert tools to the native format of frameworks like OpenAI Agents, LangChain, CrewAI, and Mastra.

### How it works

You create a Composio client with a provider adapter, create a session for a user ID, and pass the session's tools to your agent. You can store the session ID and reuse it with composio.use() across turns. Alternatively, pass mcp: true and point an MCP client at session.mcp.url. The composio CLI runs tools from your shell for coding agents like Claude Code.

## How to install Composio

**TypeScript with npm**

```
npm install @composio/core @composio/openai-agents @openai/agents
```

**Python with pip**

```
pip install composio composio-openai-agents openai-agents
```

**CLI**

```
curl -fsSL https://composio.dev/install | sh
```

### Requirements

- A COMPOSIO_API_KEY from the Composio dashboard
- Node.js >=22.22.3 for @composio/core
- Python >=3.11 and <3.16 for the composio PyPI package

### First steps

1. Get a COMPOSIO_API_KEY from the Composio dashboard settings page.
2. Create a Composio client with a provider, such as OpenAIAgentsProvider.
3. Create a session for a user ID with composio.create() and pass session.tools() to your agent.
4. For the CLI, open a new terminal after installing and run composio login.

## Who Composio is for

- Developers building multi-user agents that act on each user's own connected app accounts
- Teams using OpenAI Agents, Claude Agent SDK, Vercel AI SDK, LangChain, or similar frameworks
- Users who want to add app tools to Claude Code, Cursor, or another MCP client

### Limitations

- Composio requires an API key from its dashboard, so the SDK depends on Composio's hosted service.
- Composio does not offer every provider in both languages. Vercel AI SDK and Mastra are TypeScript-only, and CrewAI and AutoGen are Python-only.
- The @composio/core package ships TypeScript source and docs, which makes the install larger. @composio/slim is the smaller alternative.
- The Pi provider is experimental and ships from @composio/experimental.

## Composio FAQ

### Is Composio free and open source?

Yes. Composio's source code is on GitHub (ComposioHQ/composio) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install Composio?

Run `npm install @composio/core @composio/openai-agents @openai/agents`. It needs Node.js >=22.22.3. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Composio still maintained?

Yes. The ComposioHQ/composio repository was last updated on Oct 22, 2026, and the latest release, @composio/vercel@0.13.0 on GitHub, came out on Oct 21, 2026.

### How popular is Composio?

Composio has 30.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 124 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 123 a week. Its main package had about 2.1M downloads that week, +13% against its own 4-week average. That made it #18 among MCP servers and agent tools on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### Composio vs n8n: how do they compare?

Composio and n8n are both tracked by Devtoolwatch. Composio has 30.9k GitHub stars and n8n has 209.2k. In the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, Composio's main package had 2.1M downloads and n8n's had 147.7k. n8n is a fair-code workflow automation platform for building AI agents and workflows with a visual canvas plus custom code, self-hosted or cloud. ### What are the best alternatives to Composio?

Other MCP servers and agent tools on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: REA (#1), ha-mcp (#2), Treg (#3), Chrome DevTools MCP (#4), codebase-memory-mcp (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### How do I use Composio over MCP?

Composio exposes every session as a hosted MCP endpoint. Pass mcp: true to composio.create(), then point Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client at session.mcp.url.

### How do I use Composio with Claude Code?

Composio works with Claude Code through the composio CLI, which gives coding agents a local tool surface. The docs also offer a native Composio plugin for Codex or Claude Code.

### How do I use Composio with Claude?

Composio connects to Claude through several packages. You can use the Anthropic or Claude Agent SDK provider adapters, available for TypeScript and Python. You can also point Claude at a session's hosted MCP endpoint.

### Does Composio load every tool definition into the agent's context?

No. Composio sessions use meta tools by default. These meta tools discover, authenticate, and execute app tools at runtime, so hundreds of tool definitions stay out of context.

### What if my agent framework has no Composio provider?

Composio lets you build a custom provider. You can also skip providers entirely and connect over MCP.
