# CocoIndex Code review

> CocoIndex Code is an AST-based semantic code search CLI and MCP server that gives coding agents searchable context from your codebase.

## TL;DR

CocoIndex Code is a lightweight, AST-based semantic code search tool built on the CocoIndex data transformation engine. It is for developers using Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Grok or other coding agents, through a skill or an MCP server. It also offers structural search by example and can run local embeddings with no API key.

## What CocoIndex Code does

- CocoIndex Code runs semantic search across a codebase from natural language queries or code snippets.
- CocoIndex Code runs as an MCP server that exposes a search tool with language, path and pagination filters.
- CocoIndex Code provides `ccc grep`, a structural search by example that matches the syntax tree without an index, daemon or embeddings.
- CocoIndex Code installs as a skill so agents handle initialization, indexing and searching, keeping the index up to date as you work.
- CocoIndex Code ships plugins for Claude Code, Grok and Oh My Pi, with hooks that run incremental indexing after edits.
- CocoIndex Code search results include file path, language, code content, line numbers and similarity score.
- CocoIndex Code includes `ccc doctor` diagnostics that check settings, daemon, model, file matching and index health.

### How it works

CocoIndex Code is a Python CLI called `ccc`. A background daemon starts on first use and builds an index of your project. Coding agents reach it through the `ccc` skill or through `ccc mcp`, a stdio MCP server. Embeddings come from a local sentence-transformers model in the full install, or from a cloud provider through LiteLLM in the slim install.

## How to install CocoIndex Code

**With pipx**

```
pipx install 'cocoindex-code[full]'
```

**With uv**

```
uv tool install --upgrade 'cocoindex-code[full]'
```

**As an agent skill**

```
npx skills add cocoindex-io/cocoindex-code
```

### Requirements

- Python 3.11 or later.
- The slim `cocoindex-code` install requires a cloud embedding provider and API key.
- The full install pulls in local embedding dependencies of about 1 GB (torch and transformers).

### First steps

1. Run `ccc init` in your project to create settings and add `.cocoindex_code/` to `.gitignore`.
2. Run `ccc index` to build the index. It also auto-initializes new projects with default settings.
3. Search with a description, for example `ccc search "authentication logic"`.
4. Connect an agent, for example with `claude mcp add cocoindex-code -- ccc mcp`.

## Who CocoIndex Code is for

- Developers who want coding agents like Claude Code or Codex to find code by meaning.
- Exploring unfamiliar codebases or locating implementations without knowing exact names.
- Developers who want local embeddings with no API key.
- Structural code search by pattern from the terminal.

### Limitations

- CocoIndex Code's full install adds about 1 GB of torch and transformers dependencies.
- CocoIndex Code non-interactive runs, such as scripts and hooks, require a one-time `ccc init` first.
- CocoIndex Code's `ccc grep` depends on cocoindex's `code_match` feature, which the README notes is not yet in a released cocoindex.
- CocoIndex Code's Grok plugin must be installed separately, even if you already use it in Claude Code.

## CocoIndex Code FAQ

### Is CocoIndex Code free and open source?

Yes. CocoIndex Code's source code is on GitHub (cocoindex-io/cocoindex-code) under the Apache 2.0 license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install CocoIndex Code?

Run `pipx install 'cocoindex-code[full]'`. The cocoindex-code package needs Python 3.11 or newer. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is CocoIndex Code still maintained?

Yes. The cocoindex-io/cocoindex-code repository was last updated on Oct 20, 2026, and the latest release, v0.2.42 on GitHub, came out on Oct 5, 2026.

### How popular is CocoIndex Code?

CocoIndex Code has 3k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 12 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 30 a week.

### What are the best alternatives to CocoIndex Code?

Other RAG, data and memory tools on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: XERJ (#1), Memvid (#2), LEANN (#3), Graphify (#4), MarkItDown (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### Does CocoIndex Code need an API key?

CocoIndex Code needs no API key with the `cocoindex-code[full]` install, which runs local embeddings and defaults to Snowflake/snowflake-arctic-embed-xs. The slim install uses LiteLLM and requires a cloud embedding provider and API key.

### Which coding agents work with CocoIndex Code?

CocoIndex Code works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Kilo Code, Grok and Oh My Pi. Agents connect through the `ccc` skill or the `ccc mcp` MCP server.

### What is the difference between ccc search and ccc grep?

CocoIndex Code's `ccc search` runs semantic search over a built index. `ccc grep` matches code structure by example pattern against the syntax tree and needs no index, daemon or embeddings.

### How does CocoIndex Code keep the index current?

CocoIndex Code updates the index through the skill, which tells the agent to reindex as you work, or through plugin hooks that run incremental `ccc index` after edits. The MCP search tool refreshes the index before querying by default.

### What does the CocoIndex Code MCP server expose?

The CocoIndex Code MCP server exposes one `search` tool. It takes a query, limit, offset, refresh_index, and language and path filters.
