# Claude Flow review

> Claude Flow, now named Ruflo, is an agent meta-harness for Claude Code and Codex that adds coordinated agent swarms, memory, and an MCP server.

## TL;DR

Claude Flow, now called Ruflo, is an execution layer around Claude Code and Codex. Ruflo adds specialized agents, coordinated swarms, self-learning memory, federation across machines, and a console for tracking agents and cost. It is for developers who want multi-agent orchestration inside Claude Code or any MCP-enabled client.

## What Claude Flow does

- Claude Flow coordinates multiple specialized agents as swarms that run inside Claude Code or Codex.
- Claude Flow provides memory that persists across sessions, with vector retrieval and plugins for saving and restoring agent memory.
- Claude Flow runs an MCP server that exposes its tools to Codex and other MCP-enabled clients.
- Claude Flow includes a console that tracks workflows, agents, models, tokens and cost, and lets you inspect, replay and compare runs.
- Claude Flow uses hooks after init to route tasks, learn from successful patterns, and coordinate agents in the background.
- Claude Flow offers plugins for test generation, browser testing with Playwright, security audits, documentation, and running local LLMs.
- Claude Flow adds MCP tools for Anthropic Claude Managed Agents, including bounded dynamic workflows that require a budget.

### How it works

Claude Flow runs as Claude Code plugins, a CLI set up with npx, or a local stdio MCP server. The conceptual flow is User → Ruflo (CLI/MCP) → Router → Swarm → Agents → Memory → LLM providers. Memory feeds experience back into routing. The CLI install writes .claude/, .claude-flow/ and CLAUDE.md files and installs hooks and a daemon.

## How to install Claude Flow

**Project setup wizard with npx**

```
npx ruflo@latest init wizard
```

**Start the MCP server**

```
npx -y ruflo@latest mcp start
```

**Claude Code plugin marketplace**

```
/plugin marketplace add ruvnet/ruflo
```

### Requirements

- Node.js 20.0.0 or later
- Claude Code 2.1.287 or later for the plugin install path
- Embeddings and configured learning modules for the learning loop

### First steps

1. Run npx ruflo init in your project, restart Claude Code, then open the console with /ruflo.
2. After init, use Claude Code normally; the hooks route tasks and coordinate agents in the background.
3. In the console, set Settings → Claude control to write + ask so you approve each action.
4. Run npx ruflo tui to open the console in a plain terminal without Claude Code.

## Who Claude Flow is for

- Claude Code users who want multi-agent swarms, persistent memory and hooks in production projects
- Codex or other MCP-client users who want Ruflo tools through a local MCP server
- Developers who want to try single plugin commands without adding files to their workspace
- Teams that want to track agent token use and cost beside Claude Code

### Limitations

- Claude Flow mods run with your account's permissions and are not sandboxed, so the README advises reading their code first.
- Claude Flow's console and mods are Claude Code integrations; hook support in other clients depends on the client.
- Claude Flow's plugin path is lite: no hooks, and only ruflo-core registers an MCP server.
- Claude Flow's CLI install writes several files and folders into your workspace.

## Claude Flow FAQ

### Is Claude Flow free and open source?

Yes. Claude Flow's source code is on GitHub (ruvnet/ruflo) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install Claude Flow?

Run `npx ruflo@latest init wizard`. It needs Node.js >=20.0.0. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Claude Flow still maintained?

Yes. The ruvnet/ruflo repository was last updated on Oct 25, 2026, and the latest release, v3.63.0 on GitHub, came out on Oct 25, 2026.

### How popular is Claude Flow?

Claude Flow has 80.4k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 1.4k new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 1.2k a week. Its main package had about 20.5k downloads that week, +14% against its own 4-week average. That made it #40 among AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to Claude Flow?

Other AI coding agents on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Cindy (#1), OpenMausBot (#2), Orca (#3), OpenBot (#4), Agent Reach (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### What is Claude Flow?

Claude Flow is the original name of Ruflo, an agent meta-harness for Claude Code and Codex. Ruflo adds specialized agents, coordinated swarms, self-learning memory, federated communication across machines, and security guardrails around the model.

### How does Claude Flow work?

Claude Flow routes requests from its CLI or MCP server through a router to swarms of agents, which use memory and LLM providers. After npx ruflo init, hooks route tasks and learn from successful patterns in the background while you use Claude Code normally.

### Is Claude Flow safe?

Claude Flow's console lets Claude act only at the permission level you set. The default is read + ask. Network, spending and destructive actions require confirmation even in auto mode. Mods run with your account's permissions and are not sandboxed, so review their code before installing.

### Does Claude Flow work with tools other than Claude Code?

Claude Flow works with Codex and other MCP-enabled tools through its MCP server. Configure the command npx with arguments -y ruflo@latest mcp start. It also supports Grok Build via npx ruflo init --grok. The console and mods are Claude Code integrations.

### What does Claude Flow do?

Claude Flow coordinates agent swarms, keeps memory across sessions, and exposes tools over MCP. It also tracks agents and cost in a console. Plugins add test generation, browser testing, security scanning, documentation, architecture decision records and local LLM routing.
