# Browser Harness review

> Browser Harness is an open-source Python tool that lets Claude Code, Codex or Cursor control your real Chrome browser, logged in as you.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/browser-use-browser-harness/

## TL;DR

Browser Harness connects coding agents like Claude Code, Codex and Cursor to your running Chrome over the DevTools Protocol. It suits developers who want agents to act on sites where they are already signed in. When a helper is missing, the agent writes it and keeps it for later tasks, so there is no fixed tool list.

## What Browser Harness does

- Browser Harness lets an agent open pages, click, type, fill forms, read the screen, and download and upload files in your Chrome.
- Browser Harness works in your existing Chrome, with your tabs, cookies and logins.
- Browser Harness lets the agent write missing helpers in its local workspace and reuse them on later tasks.
- Browser Harness includes browser-harness-mcp, which exposes its browser control helpers as MCP tools over stdio for any MCP client.
- Browser Harness marks the controlled tab with a 🐴 in its title and works in the background, so the tab you are viewing stays yours.
- Browser Harness launches a Chromium-family browser if none is running, picking a profile that already has remote debugging enabled.

### How it works

Browser Harness is set up by pasting a setup prompt into your coding agent. The agent installs it with uv and Python 3.12, registers the skill, and connects to Chrome over the DevTools Protocol. The install.md file handles the connection, and SKILL.md teaches the browser workflow. The core package stays protected while the agent writes reusable helpers in its workspace. Cursor connects through an MCP config.

## How to install Browser Harness

**From PyPI**

```
pip install browser-harness
```

### Requirements

- Python 3.11 or later. The setup prompt uses Python 3.12.
- uv, for installation and the Cursor MCP configuration.
- Chrome or another Chromium-family browser with remote debugging enabled. On Chrome 144+, you also click Allow.
- A coding agent that can run shell commands, or an MCP client.

### First steps

1. Paste the setup prompt from the README into Claude Code or Codex. Cursor users add the MCP config to .cursor/mcp.json instead.
2. Choose whether to enable local browser recordings when the agent asks. The default is no.
3. When the agent opens chrome://inspect/#remote-debugging, tick the checkbox on first setup so it can connect to your browser.
4. Ask the agent for a task in plain words, such as downloading your latest 20 X videos.

## Who Browser Harness is for

- Developers who want a coding agent to work on sites where they are already logged in.
- Users of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Hermes Agent or OpenClaw.
- Personal web tasks like downloading files, filling forms or reading pages in your own browser.

### Limitations

- Browser Harness gets whole-browser access through remote debugging, not per-site or per-tab approval.
- The README recommends Playwright instead for isolated, repeatable CI tests of your own app in a clean browser.
- The README recommends Chrome DevTools MCP instead for performance traces and DevTools debugging.
- Running many browsers in parallel, or while your laptop is closed, requires Browser Use Cloud, which costs $0.02 per browser-hour.
