# Blender MCP review

> Blender MCP is a community plugin and MCP server that lets an LLM create, modify and inspect 3D scenes in Blender.

Devtoolwatch Board, the week of Oct 25–31, 2026. Canonical page: https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/blender-mcp/

## TL;DR

Blender MCP connects Blender to MCP clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code. It suits developers and 3D artists who want prompt-driven modeling and scene work. The AI can write Blender Python, check its work through viewport views and renders, and pull assets from Poly Haven, Sketchfab and AI 3D model services.

## What Blender MCP does

- Blender MCP creates, modifies and deletes 3D objects in Blender from AI prompts.
- Blender MCP applies and modifies materials and colors.
- Blender MCP lets the AI write and run Blender Python directly.
- Blender MCP gives multi-angle, camera, wireframe, X-ray and animation-strip views plus renders so the AI can check its own work.
- Blender MCP imports Poly Haven assets, Sketchfab models and Poly Pizza low-poly models.
- Blender MCP generates AI 3D models via Meshy, Tripo, Hyper3D Rodin and Hunyuan3D.
- Blender MCP offers a safe mode that validates scripts and blocks file, process and network access.

### How it works

Blender MCP has two parts. A Blender addon runs a socket server inside Blender, by default on localhost port 9876. A Python MCP server, usually launched with uvx by your MCP client, talks to the client over stdin/stdout and forwards commands to the addon. The MCP server can also run in Docker while Blender stays on your machine.

## How to install Blender MCP

**macOS / Linux one-line installer**

```
curl -LsSf https://www.mcp-for-blender.com/install.sh | sh
```

**Windows (PowerShell)**

```
irm https://www.mcp-for-blender.com/install.ps1 | iex
```

**If you already have uv**

```
uvx mcp-for-blender setup
```

### Requirements

- Blender 3.0 or newer
- Python 3.10 or newer
- The uv package manager, installed with the official installer rather than pip install uv
- An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or VS Code

### First steps

1. Run the installer; Blender MCP detects your MCP clients, lets you pick which to configure, and installs and enables the Blender addon.
2. Fully quit and reopen your AI app; on Windows, quit it from the system tray.
3. Open Blender; the addon starts its server. Check via N in the 3D viewport, MCP for Blender tab.
4. Ask your AI app to build something in Blender.

## Who Blender MCP is for

- 3D artists who want prompt-assisted modeling, scene creation and manipulation in Blender
- Developers using Claude, Codex, Cursor or VS Code who want an agent to script Blender in Python
- Users who want AI-generated 3D models or Poly Haven and Sketchfab assets placed directly into scenes

### Limitations

- Blender MCP's addon socket server has no authentication or encryption; anyone reaching the port can run Python inside Blender.
- Blender MCP lets the AI run any Python code by default unless safe mode is enabled.
- Blender MCP should run as only one MCP server instance, for example Cursor or Claude Desktop, not both.
- Blender MCP is a third-party integration, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Blender Foundation.

## Blender MCP FAQ

### Is Blender MCP free and open source?

Yes. Blender MCP's source code is on GitHub (ahujasid/mcp-for-blender) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install Blender MCP?

Run `curl -LsSf https://www.mcp-for-blender.com/install.sh | sh`. The blender-mcp package needs Python 3.10 or newer. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Blender MCP still maintained?

Yes. The ahujasid/mcp-for-blender repository was last updated on Oct 24, 2026, and the latest release, blender-mcp 2.0.0 on PyPI, came out on Sep 16, 2026.

### How popular is Blender MCP?

Blender MCP has 32.9k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 674 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 624 a week. Its main package had 59k downloads that week, −1% against its own 4-week average. That made it #22 among MCP servers and agent tools on the Devtoolwatch Board.

### What are the best alternatives to Blender MCP?

Other MCP servers and agent tools on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: REA (#1), ha-mcp (#2), Treg (#3), Chrome DevTools MCP (#4), codebase-memory-mcp (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### What is Blender MCP?

Blender MCP is a community plugin that connects Blender to an LLM through the Model Context Protocol. It lets the AI create and modify objects, set materials, run Blender Python and generate or import 3D assets.

### Is there an official Blender MCP?

Blender MCP is not official. Its sources describe it as an independent third-party addon that is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by the Blender Foundation.

### How does Blender MCP work?

Blender MCP uses a Blender addon that opens a socket server inside Blender, plus a Python MCP server your AI client launches. The MCP server receives tool calls from the client and sends commands to the addon, which executes them in Blender.

### How do I use Blender MCP with Claude or Codex?

Blender MCP works with both. For Claude Code run `claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender`; for Codex run `codex mcp add blender -- uvx mcp-for-blender`. For Claude Desktop, add a blender entry running uvx mcp-for-blender in claude_desktop_config.json. Then install the addon.

### Where is the Blender MCP tab in Blender?

Blender MCP's tab is in the 3D viewport sidebar. Press N in the 3D viewport and open the MCP for Blender tab. Click Start MCP Server if it is not running.

### Is Blender MCP safe?

Blender MCP lets the AI run any Python in Blender by default, and its socket server has no authentication or encryption. Keep it on localhost and set BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1 to block risky code such as direct file access, running programs or network access.
