## TL;DR

Atomic Agents is a Python framework for building AI agents from small, single-purpose components with defined input and output schemas. It is for developers who want control and predictable outputs rather than autonomous multi-agent systems. All logic and control flow is written in plain Python, and it works with many LLM providers through Instructor.

## What Atomic Agents does

- Atomic Agents defines agents with a system prompt, Pydantic input and output schemas, chat history, and context providers.
- Atomic Agents injects dynamic context into an agent's system prompt at runtime through classes that inherit from BaseDynamicContextProvider.
- Atomic Agents chains agents and tools by aligning one component's output schema with the next component's input schema.
- Atomic Agents emits an OpenTelemetry span for every agent and tool run, readable by OTLP backends such as Grafana Tempo, Datadog, Langfuse, and Jaeger.
- Atomic Agents includes an MCP connector that discovers tools, resources, and prompts from MCP servers.
- Atomic Agents provides a hook system for monitoring, error handling, and performance metrics, plus async support.
- Atomic Agents installs the Atomic Assembler CLI, which downloads Tools for use in your projects.

### How it works

You install Atomic Agents as a Python package and write agents in Python. You wrap a provider client with Instructor, for example instructor.from_openai(OpenAI()), and pass it to an AgentConfig with a model and system prompt generator. You then call agent.run() with an input schema instance. Provider SDKs such as Groq, Anthropic, and Gemini come as Instructor extras. OpenAI is included by default.

## How to install Atomic Agents

**With pip**

```
pip install atomic-agents
```

**With uv**

```
uv add atomic-agents
```

**Anthropic provider extra**

```
pip install instructor[anthropic]
```

### Requirements

- Python 3.12 or later.
- An LLM provider SDK installed through Instructor extras. OpenAI is included by default.
- Instructor >=1.17.0,<2, Pydantic 2.11.4 or later, and MCP 1.8.0 or later but below 2.

### First steps

1. Install Atomic Agents and the Instructor extra for your provider, unless you use OpenAI, which is included by default.
2. Define a custom output schema by subclassing BaseIOSchema with Pydantic fields.
3. Configure a SystemPromptGenerator with background, steps, and output instructions, then create an AtomicAgent with an AgentConfig.
4. Run the quickstart examples in atomic-examples/quickstart/quickstart/, starting with the basic chatbot.

## Who Atomic Agents is for

- Developers who want predictable, schema-validated LLM outputs in real-world applications.
- Python developers who prefer writing control flow in plain code using familiar software engineering practices.
- Teams that need OpenTelemetry tracing of agent and tool runs in an existing observability backend.
- Projects that want to swap LLM providers or tools without rewriting the pipeline.

### Limitations

- Atomic Agents requires Python 3.12 or later, so older Python environments are not supported.
- Atomic Agents does not yet support MCP 2.x. The mcp dependency is capped below 2.0.
- Atomic Agents focuses on controlled, composable pipelines rather than autonomous multi-agent systems.
- Atomic Assembler currently downloads only Tools. Agents and Pipelines are planned but not yet available.

## Atomic Agents FAQ

### Is Atomic Agents free and open source?

Yes. Atomic Agents's source code is on GitHub (Eigenwise/atomic-agents) under the MIT license, so you can use it for free.

### How do I install Atomic Agents?

Run `pip install atomic-agents`. The atomic-agents package needs Python 3.12 or newer. The install section above has the other options from the project's README.

### Is Atomic Agents still maintained?

Yes. The Eigenwise/atomic-agents repository was last updated on Oct 21, 2026, and the latest release, v2.15.0 on GitHub, came out on Oct 21, 2026.

### How popular is Atomic Agents?

Atomic Agents has 6.3k GitHub stars as of Nov 1, 2026. It gained 9 new stars in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, against a 12-week average of 15 a week.

### Atomic Agents vs LangGraph: how do they compare?

Atomic Agents and LangGraph are both tracked by Devtoolwatch as AI agent frameworks. Atomic Agents has 6.3k GitHub stars and LangGraph has 44.2k. LangGraph is a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for building, managing, and deploying long-running, stateful agents in Python or JavaScript. [LangGraph review](https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/langgraph/)

### Atomic Agents vs LangChain: how do they compare?

Atomic Agents and LangChain are both tracked by Devtoolwatch as AI agent frameworks. Atomic Agents has 6.3k GitHub stars and LangChain has 148.8k. [LangChain review](https://index.devtoolwatch.com/tools/langchain/)

### What are the best alternatives to Atomic Agents?

Other AI agent frameworks on the Devtoolwatch Board in the week of Oct 25–31, 2026, by momentum: Harness² (#1), HyperFrames (#2), AgentScope (#3), AG-UI (#4), LangGraph (#5). The alternatives table above has their numbers.

### What is Atomic Agents?

Atomic Agents is a lightweight, modular Python framework for building agentic AI pipelines and applications. It is built on Instructor and Pydantic. Agents, tools, and context providers are single-purpose, reusable components with defined input and output schemas.

### Which LLM providers does Atomic Agents support?

Atomic Agents supports multiple providers through Instructor, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, Ollama for local models, and Gemini. OpenAI is included by default. You install other provider SDKs as Instructor extras.

### Does Atomic Agents support tracing and observability?

Yes. Atomic Agents emits OpenTelemetry spans for every agent and tool run. Since v2.15.0, tracing needs only opentelemetry-api and works with OTLP backends such as Grafana Tempo, Sentry, Datadog, Honeycomb, Jaeger, Arize Phoenix, and Langfuse.

### How do I chain agents and tools in Atomic Agents?

Atomic Agents chains components by matching schemas. You set an agent's output schema to a tool's input schema, so the agent's output feeds the tool directly. To switch tools, you update the output schema to the new tool's input schema.

### Does Atomic Agents work with MCP servers?

Yes. Atomic Agents includes an MCP connector that discovers MCP tools, resources, and prompts. The connector requires MCP 1.8.0 or later and stays below version 2, because MCP 2.x support is still pending.
